25 Years Ago • May 1992

The Clear Lake City Council sold two odd pieces of property in the campgrounds area.  The Council sold the properties for $75 to Lake Partners Real Estate, Clear Lake.  The sale of the lots clears up a murky situation that has existed for years.  The city ended up with ownership of four lots after original lot lines were lost.  The lots were of little value because their only access is by walking across private property.  The Campgrounds area was created in 1876 on the north side of North Shore Drive, just west of what is now known as Buddy Holly Place and south of Highway 18.

Summer was officially off and running in Clear Lake with the annual Lake Race.  Despite chilly weather, there was a good turn out for the event.

Clear Lake public schools will end the current school year on Thursday, June 4.

Those traveling along Highway 18 last week may have seen Bruce Perry, of Chanute, Kan., making his way on a trek to International Falls.  Perry, ordained in the World Bible Way Ministries, said he is making the 3,506 mile trip “on faith.”  He is carrying a 12 foot-long, 125-pound cross with the names of many people he is praying for.  Perry said he is not asking for anything from people he meets on his walk.  Perry began his trip in April 15 and is averaging 100 miles per week.

The Clear Lake Farmer’s Week begins May 27.  The Market will be located at the corner of 3rd St. and Main Ave., on the former Park Hotel parking lot.

The 1992 Clear Lake Tour of Homes, sponsored by the Main Street Clear Lake Leadership Council will be held June 26.  Homes on the tour include: Verl and Deb Buchanan on North 8th St.; Jean and John Stanley on Dodge’s Point; Deb and Jim Stanton in Four Winds; and Jim and Diane Thompson in Tanglefoot. Tickets are $5 in advance or $6 at the door.

Tom and Jan Lovell, of Clear Lake, welcome their son, Christopher Thomas Lovell, born on May 6, 1992.  His grandparents are Marcia and Jim Connell and Anne and Don Goranson, all of Clear Lake.

Ron Myers, a 1988 Clear Lake graduate, was named a National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association Track All-American.  Myers was part of a the 4x800 meter relay team from Mesa Community College, Mesa, Az.  The MCC 4x800 team placed sixth at the NJCAA meet in Odessa, Tex.

Both the Clear Lake boys track team will take a contingent of seven senior boys to run at the State meet in the 4x200, 4x400, 4x800 and the 1600 medley.   Coaches Mike Callahan and Curt Charleston will spend the week figuring out where Mike Andrews, Chris Christ, Shane Cooney, Josh Goslin, Jeff Lester, J.D. Miller and Joe Sokol will run.  Their decision is complicated, as several athletes have qualified in individual events as well.  Lester is a double qualifier in the 200 and 400 dashes.  Miller and Goslin have also made the field in the 200 dash.  Sokol will run the 1600 run.  It is likely Lester will not run the 200 in favor of running in another relay leg along with his anchor leg in the 4x400.

The Clear Lake boys tennis team hosted the team sub-state tournament.  Unfortunately, the home court advantage couldn’t help as the Lions dropped their semi-final match with Spencer, 2-7.  The Lions did have two big bright spots in the loss. Matt Edwards and Tim Tjaden continued their strong doubles play and Edwards picked up a win at number one singles.

50 Years Ago • May 1967

A permit, estimated at $107,537 was granted to the Farmers Elevator Company with offices at 429 Main Ave., for a 75’ by 46’ wood elevator to be located at 914 N. 14th St.  Work on the building will start soon and the personnel expect it to be finished in time for the fall crops.

The Rev. and Mrs. Kenneth J. Ross have been called to pastor the First Church of the Open Bible, in Clear Lake.

Work has begun on a new drive-in at the forks of S. Shore Dr.  Robert Denney, owner, expects to have the drive-in open for the summer season.

Clear Lake High School will graduate 155 students on Tuesday, May 23.  Gary Bostrom, Randy Miles and Bruce Rich will be the theme speakers.

Kathy Young, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Young, Clear Lake, is a candidate for the title of Miss North Iowa at the North Iowa Band Festival held June 13.

Grocery specials for the week at Red Owl include: sweet corn, 6 ears, 39¢; Crest Pack Mixed Nuts, 13 oz. can, 39¢; lettuce, head, 19¢; Butternut Coffee, 3 lb. can, $1.49; Red Owl Potato Chips, 1 lb. box, 49¢; Oscar Mayer Cold Cuts, 8 oz., 39¢; and fryer breasts, lb., 59¢.

75 Years Ago • May 1942

T.L. Sears and E.M. Duesenberg Construction companies are negotiating with government officials in Des Moines for work on the building of a new transcontinental highway across Alaska through Canada. If the deal is completed they will start in Alaska.

A huge crowd is expected at the opening of Bayside next Sunday.  About $35,000 worth of improvements have been made this spring.

A total of 56 students graduated from Clear Lake High School this year.

Perk’s Ice Cream Bar will open Saturday.

DuWayne Jensen, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Jensen, has graduated with the largest class in history of the Hospital Corps school at the U.S. Naval Training Station.

Mrs. Virgil Winnie spoke for Wa-Tan-Ye Club on her trip to Hawaii for the May breakfast program at the Watkins Cafe.

100 Years Ago • May 1917

Summer service started on the interurban on Tuesday.  Cars make an hourly trip around the loop.

Frank Monaghen writes he left Colorado Tuesday with about 5,000 soldiers bound for Mexico or Honolulu.  He says they have good rations.

Frank Young will start up his ice cream factory tomorrow, also his pasteurizer.

Junk dealers pay a good price for old rubber.  Sneak thieves have been carrying them off lately.  Cal Branson was the latest victim of rubber robbing.

W.C. Thompkins, John Rich, A.A. Baker and W.W. Winnie compose a committee appointed but the G.A.R. to secure a soldier’s monument to be erected in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

The work of moving and remodeling the Catholic Church will start next week.  The cost will be about $5,000 with the new location.

Sondrol’s will have a Saturday night after supper sale with specials on off-white drill middy blouses, 98¢; bungalow aprons, 48¢; bath towels, 12.5¢; child’s rompers, 22¢; athletic corsets, $1.50; front lace corsets with ventilated back and bust, $1.75.
