Recycling minded residents will soon have a new city site to drop off their recyclable products. The City of Clear Lake will use the recently acquired livestock buying station, located on 4th Ave. S., as a recycling center. The city will then process the goods in cooperation with Handicap Village in Clear Lake.
The city’s Street Committee decided to recommend the City Council accept a settlement offer from Giese Construction, of Eagle Grove, as the result of the late completion of North Shore Drive reconstruction. Gives Construction has offered to pay the city $3,000 as a settlement. The firm had been fined $12,000 by the city.
The third annual “Top of Iowa Bike About” will be held this weekend in Clear Lake. Bicyclists of all ages are invited to enjoy a leisurely ride starting at City Park. Riders will have a choice of taking a 25, 50, 75 or 100-mile route going through nine towns. The fee is $12.
Harold Arians, of Clear Lake, was named the 1991 recipient of the “River City Chorus” Barbershopper of the Year Award.
Clear Lake students preparing to sing in New York City’s Carnegie Hall will give the public a preview when they perform in the Bandshell as a fundraiser. The students, with the help of Ge Jo’s By The Lake, will offer a slice of pizza and pop in City Park for $3.
Nelson and Darlene Crabb, of Clear Lake, will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on June 26.
Natasha Parris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Boerhave, of Clear Lake, enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. She is a 1981 graduate of Clear Lake High School.
Shawn Zimmerman, Clear Lake’s State runner-up in Class 2A at 130 pounds, took on Charles City’s Brian Fiser, the third place finisher at the State tournament in Class 3A, in the North/South All-Star Senior Wrestling Meet. Zimmerman dominated the match, 7-2. Zimmerman will be attending Iowa Central College in Fort Dodge on a wrestling scholarship.
The Clear Lake baseball team rolled through last week, winning five games and moving to 3-0 in the North Central Conference. Matt Freeseman hit a homer against SC-MT, while Eric Meyer smacked a homer against Humboldt.
The Runway Restaurant, located inside the terminal at the Mason City Municipal Airport, was recently lauded in the June 1991 edition of the Minnesota Flyer magazine.

The Clear Lake City Council has agreed to institute a one-way traffic system on two blocks of Main Ave. on an experimental basis. The system will eliminate parking meters and establish diagonal parking. Shoppers will receive one hour of free parking.
The Chamber of Commerce is launching a study of a proposed tourist information center-Chamber headquarters on the former police station site near the Main Ave. lakefront.
Playing at the Lake Theater is, “Battle of the Bulge,” starring Henry Fonda, Robert Shaw, Robert Ryan, Dana Andrews, Pier Angeli and Barbara Werle. Fiery action and danger abound.
The Fendermen and Fenderettes will appear at The Surf during the Collegiate Dance.

June 1941
Aaron Wood, 72, was killed instantly when the old C.A. Knutson building next to the Phillips Hospital was being wrecked by a professional wrecking company collapsed. Injured were John Neisham, Floyd Scarrow, Ed Hemingway and Frank Jones, all of Clear Lake. The old building dates back to 1880. It once housed the Silsby Bakery.
The hamburger shop adjoining the Palm Theatre, owned by Mrs. Ralph Callanan, is being remodeled and will become an ice cream parlor. L.L. Salesman, of LaCrosse, Wis., will operate it.
Sunday was the first warm, clear day in two weeks.
Mrs. Carl Fox’s new Oldsmobile auto was stolen at St. Paul and has not been recovered yet.

June 1916
Women suffrage was defeated by a majority of about 5,000 votes. In 94 counties, 139,253 were for it and 144,996 against.
There will be regular Sunday trains on the Milwaukee hereafter.
At the Rexall Store for 39¢ get one box of Martin Chocolates and one bottle of Liggett’s grape juice.
Sondrol’s has some bargains for their Saturday Night After Supper Sale - corset covers, lace and embroidery trimmed, 23¢; girls junior dress all sizes, 98¢; ladies crepe kimonos, 98¢.
A merry-go-round is now located on First St. near the northwest corner of the park.
Clifford Hamstreet took out his big Invincible auto which fears no muddle and laughs at any gait under 50 or 60 miles per hour.
There is cracked corn for your chickens at Hamstreet’s.
