(Above) 1991 4th of July celebration - The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce combined soaring patriotic feelings and a marketing effort to make the 1991 Fourth of July celebration a record-breaker.  Totals showed that the carnival and parade set records for attendance and revenues.  Police Chief Dan Jackson estimated the crowd along the parade route as 35,000 to 40,000 people.  There were 180 units in the parade.

It may have sounded like a fish story, but Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Bob Balek said divers from the Mason City Fire Department followed up on a report of a possible body in Clear Lake.  Balek said a fisherman reported Sunday evening that while he was fishing that afternoon he snagged something near Woodford Island.  His hook came up with hair on it, leading him to believe that he may have caught a body.  However, divers checked the island area and found nothing.  The Sheriff noted the possibility of the hair coming from a deer or other animal which may have fallen through the ice last winter and died.  No further action is expected.

Workers from Charlson Excavation, Clear Lake, tore down the former Shady Beach Lounge in preparation for a new marina and boat shop to be located on the site.  Jim Larson, of Ames, will be the owner of the new business.  Plans are for the new business to have a showroom for boats and water accessories, as well as dockside gasoline.  Boat service and storage are possibilities for the future.  The Shady Beach, also known at The Beach in recent years, was built in 1927 on the lake’s east shore.

A Clear Lake man was listed in fair condition at Mercy Hospital after he lost control of his vehicle and struck the Silver Boot Motel.  The man had an allergic reaction to medication and lost control of his car.  There was $5,000 damage to the motel, $350 to the vehicle and $50 for a mailbox.

Clear Lake’s Planning and Zoning Commission was slated to meet to consider a new residential addition to the city.  The preliminary plat of Stonecliff Addition is being proposed by a group of investors.  The development would be located on the south edge of town, just south of Oak Hills Golf Course.  Preliminary plans call for 97 lots.  However, the first phase of the plat shows 21 lots on one, U-shaped drive.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class David M. Stumme, son of Leonard and Eileen Stumme, of Clear Lake, has been promoted to his present rank of while serving with Patrol Squadron-46, Naval Air Station, Moffett Field, Calif.  He is a 1980 graduate of Clear Lake High School.  He joined the Navy in December 1987.

Sheri Riley, of Clear Lake, was a third place winner in the Miss Iowa American Pre-Teen Pageant held in Des Moines.  Riley took first place in the speech competition portion of the pageant, qualifying her for National Pageant in Tampa, Fla.

The Clear Lake softball team is still looking for their first win.  “In nine of our losses, we’ve been ahead going into the sixth inning.  We need to learn how to win,” commented a frustrated Head Coach, Troy Heller.

The Clear Lake baseball team boasts a 5-1 NCC record and an 8-6 overall record.  They did have a rough start to the week, as they dropped three games, but bounced back to pick up two wins in NCC contests.

The Goose, located at 468 North Shore Drive, will hold an all you can eat fish fry on Friday night.  Cost is $6.95.  Kentucky Fried Chicken is offering a variety bucket for $9.99.  The bucket includes 4 pieces of original chicken, four pieces of crispy chicken and eight hot wings.

June 1966

Crowds upwards of 70,000 are expected for Clear Lake’s 83rd annual July 4 celebration.  The 1966 classic will have an international flavor as the city will host 42 foreign students from 24 countries.  The Byers Brothers carnival will occupy four blocks of the business district, circling the park.  There will be fireworks two separate nights.

High temperatures and humid weather brought thousands of people to Clear Lake over the past week, along with a couple of severe wind and rain storms.  The storm Saturday night dumped 2.12 inches of rain and high winds took down several large trees and antennas.

A six-foot sidewalk was added to the City Beach park area, making it more convenient for swimmers and other visitors frequenting the popular spot.

75 Years Ago

June 1941

If we have not already declared war on Germany we are mighty close.  She knowingly bombed and sunk the freighter Robin Moor.

The Clear Lake post office has instigated some new evening hours.  They will be open every evening until 8:30 p.m. instead of 6:30 p.m.  This includes Sundays.

Harvey Wood is now engaged in tearing down his barns and other out buildings preparatory to moving off the farm and giving possession to the airport.

For the first time in many years, the water is flowing over the spillway at the outlet.  This is the first time in 12 years that so much water has run out of the lake.

Lawrence Brown, who has been with the Basket Grocery for years, has purchased the North Second Street Grocery.

100 Years Ago

A new drinking fountain has been placed the park.

Charlie Crane is some farmer, as is proven by his 35 acre corn field east of the city.

The 20th annual banquet of the Clear Lake High School will be held Friday at 6:30 p.m.  The menu will include new potatoes, Coul’s de Veal, Corn en Coquille, combination salad, lemon tea, penny buns, nut bread, strawberries, individual cakes and coffee.  Harold Mathews will be the toastmaster.

Will McGowan Sr. is suffering from blood poisoning in one of his limbs.  The ailing member was slightly injured a few days ago and blood poisoning resulted.  Gradual improvement is now taking place.

Lost on Main Street - a $5 bill, torn in two and pinned together.  Return to the Mirror office for reward.
