Remember When 6-7-2017

(Above) Showboat, 1967 - The Showboat was launched in Clear Lake in 1962.  In 1967, the boat was loaded up and was shipped to Lake Erie on a flat car.  Clear Lake has had excursion boats since 1909 when the Princess was launched.  The Princess was shipped unassembled on a flat car to Clear Lake. Lon Green and Clyde Youngglove finished the boat in the old skating rink building at Bayside.  The Showboat replaced the Princess.  The boat will long be remembered and never forgotten by the thousands who rode and enjoyed it.

June 1992

The City Council granted approval to a plan that may keep public programs at the Don Boyer Memorial Pool afloat.  Steven Nicholson, representing the ad hoc committee supporting public use of the pool, asked the Council to extend the city’s participation of the pool for two months.  Nicholson said his group plans to conduct a membership campaign and will reimburse the city $1,530 for each month the city keeps the facility open to the public.

The pursuit of two juveniles who allegedly made their way to Clear lake in a pair of stolen vehicles ended Tuesday when officials apprehended one boy and finally persuaded the other to climb down from a tree in which he was hiding. Two, 15-year-old juveniles were stopped in Clear Lake after fleeing from a treatment center in Rochester, Minn.

City Council members voted 3-2 to have the former Park Hotel lot hard surfaced.  The council accepted the bid of $3,095 by Tuttle Asphalt of Mason City to do the work.

Mason City’s Gary Blodgett defeated two Clear Lake hopefuls in the House District 19 race in the primary election Tuesday.  Blodgett outdistanced Ben Furleigh and Jim Latham easily to win the Republican nomination. Blodgett collected 1,278 votes (54 percent) to 607 for Furleigh and 481 for Latham.  Paul Ferguson, of Clear Lake, was the choice of Republican voters for sheriff.

The Subway Restaurant, on Highway 18, Clear Lake, was burglarized sometime between midnight and 7 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26.  Entry was gained by breaking in a door.  An undetermined amount of cash was taken.  Subway was also broken into several weeks ago.

Brenda Kropp represented Ventura High School as the queen candidate in the 54th Annual North Iowa Band Festival.

Teresa Schlichting, 17, daughter of Duane and Roberta Schlichting, of rural Clear Lake, has been selected as the Congressional Scholar for the state of Iowa.  Schlichting was selected from a pool of students in the upper two percent of their classes demonstrating academic achievement, leadership qualities and citizenship.  She will be among 350 students from across the nation attending the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C.

A special blues concert will be held at the Surf Ballroom on June 11.  The concert is designed to turn people on to the music that is enjoying a resurgence in America, according to ballroom managers Bruce and Sue Christensen.  Phillip Walker, a west coast blues guitar player for 35 years, will top the talent list.

The Clear Lake Church of Christ, located in the Fieldstone Addition, will hold its open house and dedication service.

Donald A. Peterson has been appointed general manager of van sales for Winnebago Industries, Inc.

The Clear Lake softball team picked up its first win of the season in their third game.  The Lions topped Mason City, 6-5.  The team fell earlier in the week to Garner-Hayfield, 8-5 and Forest City, 8-2.  The team is coached by Troy Heller.

May 1967

About 200 people attended the public open house for Dr. E.O. Berge and family at the Municipal Building.  Berge has been the Supt. of Clear Lake schools for the past 10 years and has accepted a position with the Fort Dodge schools.

Fishing is “better than ever” in Clear Lake as results of the fourth week catches have been announced.

Clear Lake paid homage to its war dead Tuesday under gloomy skies.  Although the programs at the lakefront and cemetery were impressive, less than 100 adults were counted at the Memorial Day ceremonies.

Clint Eastwood stars in “A Fistful of Dollars” at the Lake Theatre.  “Danger fits him like a tight black glove.”

Specials for the week at Ben Franklin include: lounge webbed lawn chair, $5.99; 2-ring blow up wading pool, $2.77; sand pail and shovel, 37¢; sunglasses, 77¢; girls’ playsuits, 88¢; outdoor towels, $1.37; and 30 quart ice chest, 99¢.

May 1942

The annual poppy sale sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary brought in $106.89 according to Mrs. L.G. Standard.  She reports they could have sold 250 more if they had been available.

Marcella Yeager started working this week as curb girl at June and Johnnie’s.

A crowd of about 250 men and women attended a convention of Iowa Bankers here.

Earl Ashland has completed his new store building in Hampton and is now open for business.

Miss Kathryn Pramer, East Main St., has enlisted in the women’s army and will take officers training in Des Moines.  This is the first women’s army camp to be started in the U.S.

Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Knutson entertained at a dinner party at Hotel Kirkwood, Des Moines, honoring Emily Mae’s 11th birthday.  Patsy Pierce, Clear Lake, and Gov. and Mrs. George Wilson and Mary were guest.  They visited the capitol building and the little girls were allowed to sit in the governor’s chair.

May 1917

Buy carp at the dock from Will Hubbard for 6¢ a lb. and reduce the high cost of living.

Charlie Adams went to Chicago with a load of stock.

A Mason City game warden arrested a Clear Lake man for illegal fishing, while at the same time breaking the law himself by having a paper number on his auto.

George Hicks, the new proprietor of the Lake Shore Hotel, will open the dining room to the public June 15 on the European plan.

A kindergarten will be conducted this summer by Miss Olive Gillies in the lecture room of the Methodist Church.

With bacon selling at 40¢ a pound, one is tempted to start eating carp.

The Watts delicatessen will be opened in the Peterson building north of the post office.
