Roland Schmidt
Roland F. Schmidt, 92, of Garner, Iowa, died Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, at the Concord Care Center, in Garner.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, in Garner, with Fr. Jim Dubert officiating. Lector was Greg Schmidt. Music was provided by organist, Mary Kopacek, who accompanied soloist Mary Chambers and the church choir. Casket bearers were Louis Schmidt, Greg Schmidt, Curt Doble, Tom Hyde, Tim Esbeck and Michael Schmidt. Burial was in the church cemetery with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.
Roland Francis Schmidt, the son of Leo and Rose (Roach) Schmidt, was born Jan. 31, 1923, in Mason City, Iowa. He graduated from Garner High School in 1940. Roland served his country in the U.S. Army from Feb. 22, 1945, until his honorable discharge on Feb. 21, 1946. On May 18, 1948, Roland was united in marriage to Lucille Koppen, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, in Wesley, Iowa. The couple made their home in Garner where they spent all of their married life. Roland was employed at the United States Postal Service, in Garner, from 1947 until his retirement in 1972.
He was a lifetime member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and charter member of the Garner V.F.W., where he served as a service officer for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Lucille Schmidt, of Garner; six children, Louis (Janice) Schmidt, of Kenyon, Minn., Gregory (Bonnie) Schmidt, of Clear Lake, Mary (Tom) Hyde, of Clear Lake, Michelle (Curt) Doble, of Hugo, Minn., Jennifer (Tim) Esbeck, of Clear Lake, and Michael Schmidt, of Garner; 10 grandchildren, Kellie Schmidt, Sara (Lance) Horst, Morgan (Heather) Masteller, Mia Masteller, Jesse (Rachel) Hyde, Jack (Jenn) Hyde, Nathan (Abby) Doble, Amanda (Jeff) Yeschick, Joslyn (Daniel) Darling and Jordan (Rob) Greiner; 13 great-grandchildren; his brother, Darl (Darlene) Schmidt, of Garner; brother-in-law, William (Helen) Koppen; sister-in-law, Betty Crandall; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Roland was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Gerald (Rosella) Schmidt.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Opportunity Village in Clear Lake.
Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner, was in charge of arrangements.
