Season ends for CL tennis team

Team competition came to an end for the Clear Lake girls tennis team Saturday, May 16, in Regional competition at the Wartburg College indoor facilities in Waverly.  The Lions will, however, participate in the Individual Regionals Thursday, May 21, in Decorah.

Due to a forfeit by Hampton-Dumont, Clear Lake moved to the second round of Regional competition and met host Waverly-Shell Rock.   The Go-Hawks shutout the Lions, 5-0.

“Despite the loss, the girls showed great improvement from the beginning of the season and never let up in their matches today,” said Coach Mary Jo Peterson.

After four very competitive matches by Lindsey Loudenburg, Gretchen Jones, Kirsten Jordan and Kylie Bottjen, Clear Lake found themselves behind 4-0 before Kiertsen Baalson and Reagan Brackey completed their matches.

Loudenburg fell 1-6, 4-6; Jones went down 2-6, 1-6; Jordan was defeated 4-6, 1-6; and Bottjen lost 1-6, 2-6.

Baalson dropped her first set, 3-6, and was tied 3-3 when the match was called.  Brackey fell 1-6. 0-6, giving W-SR the victory.

In doubles, Loudenburg and Jones dropped the first set 2-6, but were up, 3-2 in the second set when the match was called.  Jordan and Bottjen were in progress, 1-6, 3-3 when play was stopped.
