Sentence issued in Ave. of Saints crash

A Belmond man who drove into oncoming traffic near Clear Lake last month has been sentenced to two years in prison.  District Judge Annette Boehlje sentenced Robert Summers Tuesday, Oct. 6.

Summers, 24, drove off from a traffic stop when an Iowa State Patrol trooper tried to stop his car in Mason City on Sept. 23. The vehicle then went west from Mason City on the Avenue of the Saints, running over stop sticks placed down by an officer.  Summers then intentionally drove through the median into the eastbound lanes and struck a semi near the driver’s side door, ripping off the rig’s fuel tank.

As part of a plea deal with prosecutors, Summers pleaded guilty to eluding with a charge of driving while barred being dropped.

At the time of his arrest, Summers was also wanted on warrants for first-degree theft and possession with the intent to manufacture illegal mushrooms from Wright County.
