Smith places 2nd in 3200
(Above) GHV’s Reece Smith ran his way to a second place finish in the 3200 with a time of 9:30.03.
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys track team had a competitive weekend at the State Track and Field Meet held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Reece Smith was hoping to top his second place finish at last year’s State meet in the 3200. It wasn’t in the cards this year, as Smith again placed second with a time of 9:30.03. A plus side of this year’s meet is that Smith ran a personal best time and broke a GHV school record from 1982 held by Brent Schroeder who ran the race in 9:41.79. Smith also competed in the 1600 meter run, placing 13th with a time of 4:34.05.
Ray Cataldo also competed in two events at the State meet. He dropped :12 seconds from his personal best time in the 3200 to finish 17th in 10:09.87. In the 800, he also ran a personal best time and placed 14th in 2:01.45.

Logan Dalbeck, who will be running for NIACC next season, placed 20th in the 1600 with a time of 4:38.77.
“These three boys have put in the extra time and miles to be successful,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “They should be very proud of their accomplishments, not only at the State meet, but throughout the season.”
