Soccer team bounces back with a shutout after suffering two losses

The Clear Lake boys soccer team bounced back from losses to Garner-Hayfield-Ventura and Webster City with a shutout over Belmond-Klemme.  The Lions are now 5-7 overall and were set to host New Hampton in a Class 1A first round playoff match Monday, May 16.

GHV 5, CL 0

The Lions had some good looks, but couldn’t score against Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Monday, May 9.  GHV recorded a 5-0 victory.

“We came out well in the first half, finding space up the sides to get a couple good looks at goal , but were unable to find the back of the net,” said Lions Coach Zach Hall. 

GHV got their first score from about 25 yards out o a shot that banked in off the post.  Then, with :33 seconds remaining in the half, the Cards caught the Lions sleeping to finish strong and go into the halftime with a 2-0 lead. 

“In the second half we had some good spells of possession, but again couldn’t find the back of the net. GHV was able to score twice in the span of :90 seconds 15 minutes into the second half on a couple defensive mistakes on our end,” said Coach Hall.  

GHV scored their last goal with 4 minutes remaining for a 5-0 final

WC 4, CL 0

The Lions’ second game in as many days was similar to the GHV contest.  There were opportunities to get to the net, but again they came up empty.  Webster City rolled, 4-0.

“We had several good spells of possession and looks at goal, but nothing quality that challenged their goalkeeper,” said Coach Hall.  “A couple of lapses in concentration and focus allowed Webster City to get a couple goals in each half.

CL 4, B-K 0

The Lions shook off three losses in the previous seven days with a win over Belmond-Klemme Thursday, May 12.  Clear Lake recorded its fourth shutout of the season, 4-0.

“We focused on getting the basics right and keeping things simple,” said Coach Hall.  “We started off with good energy and possession, which resulted in three goals in the first five-minutes of the game.”

Kinnick Clabaugh started the scoring with a goal :90 seconds into the game assisted by Travaughn Luyobya.   Andrew Korenberg scored the first of his two goals off a corner kick two-minutes later, and his second goal a minute after that, assisted again by Luyobya. 

The rest of the first have was a little more back and forth, with a few good opportunities which the Lions wee not able to capitalize on. The teams went into halftime with Clear Lake on top, 3-0.

“In the second half B-K came out with more energy, which we did a good job of matching to keep them off the score sheet and getting back into the game,” said Coach Hall.  

Twenty-two minutes into the second half Matt Moore found Luyobya on a through ball for his first goal of the night to make the score 4-0. 

“Our defense did an excellent job the remainder of the half to shut out B-K,” added Hall.

Goalkeeper Hunter Trenary had five saves in the win.
