Strong opening for GHV baseball
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura baseball team is off to a solid start, picking up two wins to open the season.
GHV 10, Forest City 8
It was an offensive battle to the end when the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura baseball team traveled to Forest City on Wednesday, May 25. The two teams combined for 18 runs and 22 hits, but it was the Cardinals that prevailed with a 10-8 victory.
It was back-to-back scoring in the first three innings, with the Cardinals managing a slight, 5-4 lead. GHV ripped it open in the fourth inning with five runs to go up, 10-4. The Indians battled back in the sixth inning on a two-run error and a two-run single, but couldn’t manage any more runs for the final 10-8.
Payton James was the winning pitcher, with one strike-out and two walks. He gave up 11 hits.
James led the team at the plate with three RBIs on three hits. Anthony Sherwood had two hits, while Colton Schroeder had two hits and three RBIs. Cade Bamrick had two hits, including one double and he had one RBI.
Scoring two runs apiece were Bamrick, Harley Forry and Sherwood. Ryley Kozisek, Schroeder, Nick Joynt and Ryan Meyers scored one run apiece.
GHV 3, West Hancock 1
A strong pitching performance by Ryan Meyers helped the Cardinals capture a 3-1 win over West Hancock on Friday, May 27.
Meyers had a phenomenal night with seven strikeouts. He allowed no earned runs, gave up four hits and had no walks. Colton Schroeder took the mound and pitched three shut-out innings. He struck out seven, walked three and gave up one hit.
West Hancock scored first with an RBI double in the first inning. That was the only run the Eagles could manage.
GHV didn’t score until the fourth inning, when Nick Joynt crossed the plate. The Cardinals didn’t put the game away until the 11th inning. A hit and an RBI by Cade Bamrick put GHV up by one. Holden Hutcheson got on base with a walk. He went from first to second on a single by Ryley Kozisek. Both scored for the final, 3-1.
Harley Forry collected three hits in the game, while Payton James had two and Joynt, Alex Goll, Kozisek, Schroeder and Bamrick each had one.
Collecting one RBI apiece was Anthony Sherwood, Alex Goll and Bamrick.
