Superintendent sharing on School Board agenda

The Clear Lake School Board is expected to discuss the future of its superintendent sharing agreement with the Mason City School District when it meets tonight (Wednesday, Nov. 11).

The 2015-16 school year is the sixth that the two districts have shared a superintendent, as well as other positions.  Earlier this year the Board indicated it was interested in at least planning for a time in which the superintendent position would not be shared.

In March, the Mason City School Board agreed to continue sharing on a 4-3 vote.

The Clear Lake School District, helped by state incentives, has spent just $121,930 for the shared superintendent over five years. Total district savings by sharing a superintendent tops $765,000. The Mason City School District has saved more than $940,000 since the sharing agreements were established.

Clear Lake School Board members have expressed their concern that incentives may eventually be reduced and Mason City, which holds 60 percent of the contract, may decide to end the sharing.

Clear Lake School Board President Chyrl Bergvig said she believes the sharing discussion will focus solely on the superintendent post, rather than other shared positions such as food service director and technology coordinator.

Other business on the Clear Lake Board’s 5:30 p.m. Monday agenda include requests for early retirement.
