Three Lions earn INA All-State selections

The Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2017 All-State Football selections Tuesday.  Selections were made by 105 Iowa Newspaper Association members.

Three members of the Clear Lake Lions were named to the Class 2A All-State Second Team.  Zach Lester was selected as a tight end/wide receiver; senior Joey Monson was honored as a defensive linebacker; Jared Penning, a junior, was picked as an offensive lineman;

Lester, a senior, was primarily a scoring threat as a receiver, making 43 receptions for 818-yards and eight touchdowns.  He ran the ball just five times, but accumulated 50-yards rushing with a TD.  He returned nine kickoffs a total of 187-yards, an average of just over 20-yards per return.  He recorded one 95-yard return for a touchdown.

Monson made a total of 56 tackles during the season, 45 of them solo.    Twenty-seven of his solo tackles were for a loss.  He made 12 solo sacks and had one fumble recovery.

Six-foot, seven inch, 320-pound Jared Penning, anchored the Lion line.  He made nine solo and 3.5 tackle assists.  Three solo tackles were for a loss.
