Time to focus for CL boys golf team

The Clear Lake boys golf team spent much of last week on the links and Coach Bart Smith is challenging his players to begin to put all of their experience together heading into the post-season.

“We competed well in some of our tournaments and won a quad that we were suppose to win, but right now if we don’t turn 

things around and start focusing on things that we have talked about to shoot lower, we are an average team that will stay home during State golf. Putting and chipping is why we haven’t improved our scores.”

Last week the Lions dropped a dual meet to a good St. Ed’s team, then rebounded with a quadrangular win before facing some of the top teams in the state. 

St. Ed’s 143, CL 170

Thomas Storbeck and Austin Rurup each carded 40’s, but it wasn’t enough to help the Lions past St. Ed’s.  The Gaels were 27-strokes better than the Lions.  Other counting scores for Clear Lake included a 44 from Dane Waldron and 46 from Jon Carew.  Kyle Calaguas and Tanner Storbeck had rounds of 48 and 49.

IF-A Quadrangular

The Lions bested the field at the Iowa Falls-Alden Quadrangular.  Clear Lake won with a 159, followed by Aplington-Parkersburg with 167, Grundy Center with 180 and IF-A with 188.

Dane Waldron and Jon Carew led the Lions with rounds of 38 and were meet medalists.  Austin Rurup was next with a 41 for the Lions and Kyle Calaguas and Tanner Storbeck each had 42’s  Thomas Storbeck came in with a 47.

Washington Invit.

The Washington Invitational, played Tuesday, May 6, at the Ames Golf and Country Club, pitted some of the state’s best Class 3A teams, and perennial State qualifiers-- against each other on the host course for the State Meet.  

Decorah pulled out a one-stroke victory over Pella, 316-317, to top the field.  Williamsburg was third with a 327, followed by Clear Lake and Fairfield each with 335.  Washington was sixth in 371.

Colton Bradley, of Pella, was the medalist with a 74.

Each of the top three teams had one or more players finish with a score in the 70s.  

The Lions were led by Dane Waldron with 80.  The remainder of the scores were bunched between 84 and 86, with Jon Carew carding an 84, Thomas Storbeck 85 and Austin Rurup and Kyle Calaguas each finishing with an 86.  Tanner Storbeck also played and scored an 88.

Jordan Invitational

On Friday and Saturday, May 9 and 10, the Lions were at the Jordan Invitational held at Ridges at Sand Creek, the host course for 2A State qualifiers in Minnesota.  On day two, the back nine was not scored due to thunderstorms.  The Lions finished sixth in the team standings.

Individually, Dane Waldron finished in a tie for sixth with a two-day score of 119.  His play on the second day moved him from 11th to sixth overall.  He carded a 38 on day two.  Austin Rurup was the second golfer in for the Lions with a 127 (82-45), followed by Thomas Storbeck with (85-44) 129 and Kyle Calaguas with (87-47) 134.  Jon Carew (90-46) and Tanner Storbeck (92-44) each finished with a two-day total of 136.
