Tough week for the Cardinals

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura softball team went 1-4 in action last week, moving its record to 3-14.

North Iowa 16, GHV 10

GHV 21, North Iowa 13

The Cardinals split a pair of games with North Iowa in a double header showdown on Monday, June 12.  Both teams were hot at the plate and seemed to score at will.  North Union took the first game, 16-10, while GHV took the second game, 21-13.

In the first game, the score was close after two innings with the Bison claiming a one run lead, 6-5.  North Union scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 12-5 lead.  They hung on to the lead the rest of the game for the 16-10 victory.

Jackie Van Oort led the team at the plate with two hits, one being a double, and two RBIs.

Jayden Hughes had one hit, one RBI and had three stolen bases.

Bailee Pitzenberger pitched four innings for the Cards, giving up 15 hits, 14 runs and she struck out one.  Ashley Markla also saw some time on the mound.  She gave up two hits, two runs and struck out one.

Hughes collected four hits in four at bats to lead the Cardinals to a huge 21-13 victory in the second game of the night.  Both offenses were strong at the plate with GHV collecting 16 hits and North Iowa 14.

The Cards had a stellar second inning, scoring nine runs on a single by Kaylee Mahlstedt, a single by Trinity Smith, two singles by Hughes and a double by Jillian Heitland.

Markla and Maddie Graham split the duties on the mound. Marcela gave up 12 hits, 11 runs and struck out two.  Graham gave up two hits, two runs and struck out four.

Hughes, Van Oort, Smith and Mahlstedt collected multiple hits for the Cardinals.  Van Oort led the team in RBIs with three, while Hughes, Heitland, Mahlstet and Smith all had two RBIs.

Algona 12, GHV 0

The Cardinal bats went cold against Algona on Tuesday, June 13.  GHV only managed three hits in the three innings of play as the Bulldogs shut-out the Cardinals, 12-0.

Algona scored three runs in the second inning and nine in the third to seal the victory.

Jayden Hughes, Jackie Van Oort and Mackenzie Van Gerpen were the only Cardinals to connect at the plate.

Jillian Heitland took the loss on the mound, pitching the entire game.  She gave up nine hits, 12 runs and struck out one.

Forest City 12, GHV 1

Forest City had a couple of strong innings that proved to be too much for the Cardinals, as they lost 12-1 to the Indians on Wednesday, June 14.

The Indians led 8-1, at the bottom of the fifth.  Forest City scored four runs in the seventh inning, due to an error and a home run.

The Cardinal’s lone run came in the bottom of the third when Jayden Hughes connected on a single that brought in Jillian Heitland.

Hughes, Nicole Upmeyer and Heitland were the only GHV players to get a hit.  Forest City collected 13 hits in the game.

B-K 15, GHV 3

It was a long night for the Cardinals when they hosted Belmond-Klemme on Monday, June 19.  B-K made a short night of it, defeating GHV 15-3 in four and one-half innings.  The Broncos collected 16 hits in the contest, three being home runs.

The fourth inning was rough on the Cards, as the Broncos racked up eight runs, aided by a home run and three singles.

The Cardinals scored one run in the second inning when Megan Oetken grounded out and Abby Kale scored.

The final two runs for GHV were scored in the third inning.  Mackenzie Van Gerpen doubled on a fly ball to center field and scored Jackie Van Oort.  That was followed by Bailee Pitzenberger hitting a single line drive to left field that got Van Gerpen across the plate.

Oetken, Van Gerpen and Pitzenberger each drove in one run apiece.    Van Gerpen led the team with two hits, one being a double.

Pitzenberger took the loss on the mound.  She gave up 15 hits, 13 runs and struck out two.  Maddie Graham pitched one inning.  She gave up one hit, two runs and struck out two batters.
