When the Lake Mills volleyball team comes to town, a tough night is guaranteed. The number eight rated Bulldogs (16-0) did not disappoint, as they trounced GHV in all three matches by scores of 25-12, 25-15 and 25-9.
Hannah Lau and Mackenzie Van Gerpen led the team in kills with seven and six respectively. Lau also had two blocked shots and Van Gerpen had one.
Van Gerpen led the team on defense, recording 12 digs. Carlie Knutson had four digs and Lau and Sydney Childress had three digs apiece.
Childress led the team in assists with 11.
Payton Bamrick was a perfect 5/5 on the service line and recorded two ace serves. Knutson and Jacki Van Oort had one ace serve apiece.
C-G-D 3, GHV 0
Trying to find a way to work under pressure is a new goal the Cardinals will try to work on following a match against Clarion-Goldfield-Dows on Thursday, Sept. 17.
“An area we will continue to work on in practice is finishing out a set,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “The match against Clarion-Goldfield was competitive, but we were unable to push the last few points and execute when there was pressure.”
GHV put up a good fight in the first match, with back and forth scoring. C-G-D finally captured the 31-29 victory. The Cardinals were right there in the next two sets as well, but just couldn’t pull off a win and fell, 25-20 and 25-23.
Jacki Van Oort led the team at the service line, collecting 10 points on serve on seven times at the line. She also had two ace serves. Sydney Childress scored nine points on serve and Hannah Lau scored eight points on serve.
Mackenzie Van Gerpen had a strong night, with 16 kills and eight digs. Lau was also a leader, collecting 11 kills and six digs.
Carlie Knutson led the defense with 15 digs. Childress led the team in assists with 25.
The Cardinals compete in a tournament on Saturday at Bishop Garrigan.
