Foot of snow, ice contribute to dangerous road conditions

A young driver and his passenger escaped serious injury Sunday when the car they were traveling in left an ice-covered roadway and landed on its roof.

Cerro Gordo County Deputies responded to Balsam Avenue and 290th Street Sunday, Nov. 22, at 6:14 p.m. for a single vehicle rollover.  The driver, 22-year-old Laddie Kozisek, of Garner, was driving a 2002 Ford F-250 pickup southbound on Balsam Avenue when he lost control due to the ice-covered roadway.

Kozisek was uninjured in the rollover, but he was trapped in the vehicle and extrication tools were used to remove him.

The passenger, 21-year-old Hannah Field, of Garner, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa by ambulance.

Kozisek was cited for failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle and failure to wear a safety belt.  Field was charged with failure to wear a safety belt.

The collision remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.

In addition to the Sheriff’s Department, the Iowa State Patrol, Mason City Fire Department, Clear Lake Fire Department, Ventura Fire Department, Mercy Air Med and Garner Ambulance assisted on the scene.
