A week of ups and downs for the GHV boys track team

It was a week of highs and lows for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys track team, as they finished at the top of the pack in one meet, and at the bottom of another.

Lake Mills Bulldog Invitational

A team effort helped the GHV boys to a second place finish at the Lake Mills Bulldog Invitational on Thursday, April 14.  The Cardinals racked up 114 points.  Lake Mills won the seven-team meet with 129 points.

“Our goal is to have everyone contribute to team points,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.  “The boys have had to step up and compete in different roles and they are doing so with a fantastic attitude.”

That “can-do” attitude paid off with four individual first place finishes.  Ray Cataldo won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:07.89.  Logan Dalbeck ran the 1600 meter run in a time of 4:41.64.  Chase Smith won the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:52.73 and Sam Cataldo won the 400 meter hurdles in 57.35.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Marroquin, Connor Shaw, Cook and Sam Cataldo won the event with a time of 45.53.

Relays finishing with second place finishes was the 4x800 team and the shuttle hurdle team.  The 4x800 relay ran the race in 8:40.72.  Members included Smith, Derek Brown, Ray Cataldo and Dalbeck.  The shuttle hurdle team of O’Connor, Cook, Connor Shaw and Sam Cataldo crossed the line in 1:05.88.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Dalbeck, Reece Smith, Marroquin and O’Connor ran the race in 3:50.23.  Good for third place.

Only three Cardinal runners put up points for the team, Sam Cataldo, Johnathan O’Connor and Chase Smith.
