The Clear Lake Lions got a boost of confidence last week with a pair of wins.  This week the Lions will participate in the Waverly Tournament Saturday, May 7.

CL 7, Humboldt 1

On Monday, April 25, the Lions welcomed the Humboldt Wildcats to Lions Field.  Good passing helped the Lions to a 7-1 victory.

Sam Pedelty opened the scoring for the Lions when a ball deflected toward the Humboldt goal keeper was run down by Pedelty, landing the ball and himself in the goal.

Jarod Anderson recorded the second goal off an assist by Tanner Berger.  Berger kept the assists coming with a second to Dylan Clapper, who pulled the ball away from the Humboldt keeper with a nice finish for the third goal.

The final goal of the half came from multiple player passing which concluded with Pedelty crossing the ball to Parker Pitzen, who finished the goal with a one touch into the back of the net.  The Lions took a 4-0 lead into halftime.

Anderson got the scoring going in the second half with a goal and a penalty kick to record a hat trick for the game.

Sean Wendel finished the scoring for the Lions giving the team a 7-1 victory.

Kyle Willms and Bryce Schmalen recorded 4 saves apiece in goal in 67 and 13 minutes of time.

“This was a much needed confidence boost for our team.  It was good for us to find our grove and see the boys enjoying the team success,” said Coach Matt Anderson.

CL 4, GHV 2

On Friday, April 29, the Lions hosted the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Cardinals.

Sam Pedelty again got the Lions off to a fast start with a goal in the 17th minute off an assist by Jarod Anderson.  The second goal came two minutes later when Cody Matz made a long ball pass to Tanner Berger who finished the pass for goal.  In the 26th minute, Parker Pitzen made a pass to Aaron Canchola to give the Lions a 3-0 lead at the half.  In the 54th minute, Berger connected with Anderson for the Lions final goal.

GHV converted goals in the 75th and 78th minutes making the final score 4-2.   Connor Burke scored both goals.

Kyle Willms recorded five saves in 72 minutes of play and Bryce Schmalen recorded one save in eight-minutes of play.

“I was pleased with the level of focus and intensity the boys brought from the beginning of the match. This was a good competitive match which provided us with some insight into areas we need to improve on,” said Coach Matt Anderson.

GHV Coach Eric Williams said his team made a lot of mental errors which he believed cost his team the match.

“We played really good soccer, holding possession and passing the ball.  When you play a tram like Clear Lake you can’t make the slightest mistake, as they will capitalize on them, and they did.  We continue to get better, and the young men are eager to play them again.  We have a week off, which will be nice to work on our fundamentals and fix the little things.”

GHV goalkeeper Aidan McRobie had five saves in the match.
