Hardwork pays off for Peterson

    Clear Lake’s Trudy Peterson has been gaining steam as the season has progressed.  Saturday the Clear Lake sophomore recorded her best time of the season, 15:58, and earned a trip to the State Cross Country Meet in Fort Dodge Saturday.  Peterson placed ninth overall in the Class 3A District meet at Spencer.

Vikings keep scoring train rolling; down CAL, 74-32

    One thing can be said for the Ventura Vikings - they sure know how to score.  So far this season, the Vikings have amassed 253 points.  Friday night’s game against CAL was no exception to the scoring frenzy, as Ventura topped the Cadets, 74-32.
    Ventura was a scoring machine in the first quarter, collecting four touchdowns. 
    Schmitz opened the scoring with a 31-yard run, followed by a completed seven-yard pass to Shawn Murphy.  Both PAT attempts were blocked for a 12-0 lead.  Joel Watson

Area players named to INA All-State teams

    A pair of Clear Lake Lions and a Ventura Viking have earned All-State football honors in their respective classes.
    Clear Lake’s Logan Kellogg and Tanner Truesdell were named to the Class 3A Second Team.  Ventura’s Ryan Schmitz was a Third Team selection among 8-player teams.

Vikings just short of victory

  For the second week in a row, the Ventura Vikings saw their chances for a victory slip away in the final minute of play.  With 1:15 remaining in Friday night’s match-up at Riceville the game was tied 40-40, but a final Wildcat TD with :09 remaining on the clock ended the game.  The loss closed the chapter on 67 years of Ventura football.

G-H/V/WH cross country teams have impressive week

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock cross country teams put in another impressive week.  Both the girls and boys brought home top finishes in their home meet held Monday, Sept. 26, and a met at Hampton-Dumont on Thursday, Sept. 29.

    The girl’s team placed first and the boys captured second place at their home meet.  The girls finished with 20 points, ahead of North Iowa with 67 and Central Springs with 81.  The boys finished with 61 points, behind Osage with 43 points.  Seven teams competed in the meet.

Vikes come up short despite scoring frenzy

If there is one thing that can be said about eight man football - it is not boring.  The game Friday night at Ventura against Tripoli was no exception, as a total of 16 touchdowns were scored.  Unfortunately, the seven touchdowns Ventura scored weren’t enough to take down the Panthers.  They fell, 64-51, in the high-scoring showdown.

VHS runners ready to contribute to G-H/V/WH squad

 Three Ventura cross country runners will begin their second year as part of the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock cross country team.  The team is coached by Jeff Short, who has been coaching the Garner-Hayfield/West Hancock team since 2005.  Ventura joined the combined program in 2010.  Runners from Ventura include Joel Toppin, Jeff O’Brien and Jacob Heinemann.
