G-H/V/WH cross country teams have impressive week

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock cross country teams put in another impressive week.  Both the girls and boys brought home top finishes in their home meet held Monday, Sept. 26, and a met at Hampton-Dumont on Thursday, Sept. 29.
    
Garner Meet
    The girl’s team placed first and the boys captured second place at their home meet.  The girls finished with 20 points, ahead of North Iowa with 67 and Central Springs with 81.  The boys finished with 61 points, behind Osage with 43 points.  Seven teams competed in the meet.

Vikes come up short despite scoring frenzy

If there is one thing that can be said about eight man football - it is not boring.  The game Friday night at Ventura against Tripoli was no exception, as a total of 16 touchdowns were scored.  Unfortunately, the seven touchdowns Ventura scored weren’t enough to take down the Panthers.  They fell, 64-51, in the high-scoring showdown.

VHS runners ready to contribute to G-H/V/WH squad

 Three Ventura cross country runners will begin their second year as part of the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock cross country team.  The team is coached by Jeff Short, who has been coaching the Garner-Hayfield/West Hancock team since 2005.  Ventura joined the combined program in 2010.  Runners from Ventura include Joel Toppin, Jeff O’Brien and Jacob Heinemann.

Softball team ready for late season run

The Clear Lake softball team is continuing to show improvement which Coach Nicki Petersburg feels will have her team ready for a late season run.  Last week the Lions played their best ball of the season while earning a sin over St. Ed’s.  They also topped Algona during the week to go to 9-17 on the year.

CL girls fall to 4th ranked Mohawks

The Clear Lake girls basketball team opened the season under tough conditions Friday.  They were on the road and on the court of the number four ranked (4A) Mason City Mohawks.  Mason City overpowered the Lions, 92-36.

Lady Vikes top N-K in first district win

 
    It was an exciting night for Ventura volleyball, as the team picked up its first district win again Northwood-Kensett on Wednesday, Oct. 19, in Ventura. 
    The first set was not a strong effort by Ventura, but they were able to pull ahead and held on for a 25-20 victory.  The Lady Vikes jumped to a big lead in the second set, but allowed N-K back into the game, however, Ventura was able to hold on for the 25-22 win.  Missed serves plagued the Lady Vikes in the third set, but a never give up attitude sealed the win, 25-23.

Lady Vikes go 1-2 in recent volleyball action

    The Ventura volleyball team dropped two games and picked up one win in recent volleyball action.

    The Lady Vikes traveled to Swea City on Tuesday, Sept. 27, to play NSKAR.  Ventura lost in three matches, 26-24, 25-15 and 25-8.

Clear Lake volleyball team drops matches in triangular meet

    The Clear Lake volleyball team met up with some tough competition in a triangular match Thursday.  Third ranked (3A) Charles City and (4A) Mason City both swept the Lions.
    Charles City cruised to a 25-8, 25-5 win, while the match with Mohawks was closer, 25-14, 25-20.
    “I thought we looked a little nervous versus Charles City.  We came out of the locker room not ready to play and that is my fault as the head coach,” said the Lion leader, Scott Swenson.  “Charles City

Schools plan preview events

Clear Lake Schools invite the public to preview its fall sports teams at a pair of events this week.
     Thursday, Aug. 18, new volleyball coach Scott Swenson will introduce his team at a preview slated for 6:30 p.m. in the high school gym.

Rollin’, rollin’, rollin’

On the strength of four more victories last week-- bringing their total to 21, the Clear Lake baseball team has moved to the number five spot in the Class 3A rankings.  The Lions posted three non-conference wins and then topped Algona Garrigan 14-4 to remain perfect in the league.  The Lions will host St.
