The Clear Lake boys unleashed a powerful run game and stomped the competition in their season-opening games last week.

Five Cardinals named to All Conference teams

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team had five girls named to the All Conference team. Seniors Emily Mathews and Courtney Younge earned First Team recognition.  Senior Shelby Rayhons and  freshman Hannah Lau were named to the Second Team and Mallory Van Oort, a junior, earned Honorable Mention recognition.

Mathews, who was one of three unanimous choices for First Team, led the team in several categories, including kills with 276, ace serves with 43, total blocks with 75 and digs with 118.

Cardinals improve to 6-2 with win over Midgets

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura Cardinals (6-2) barreled through the Estherville (2-6) defense Friday night en route to a decisive win over the Midgets.

Clear Lake Board approves sharing with MC

The Clear Lake School Board voted 4-1 Monday night to approve a sharing agreement with the Mason City Community School District which will provide oversight and training for two Clear Lake employees carrying out the duties of transportation/building and grounds director.

Jeff Sheimo and Sterling Washburn, longtime employees of the Clear Lake School District, have been leading the departments since Kelly McLaughlin resigned the position in August after being placed on a paid administrative leave of absence in June.

Clear Lake harriers finish strong at B-K Invitational

 

Clear Lake harriers rose to the challenge last week and finished strong at the Belmond-Klemme Invitational Tuesday, Sept. 10.

With two of their top five boys hurt, the Lions still finished third in the eight-team field.  Osage and GHV/WH were first and second respectively with 40 and 44 points respectively.  The Lions finished with 89.  Eagle Grove (107), Forest City (127), Central Springs (146) and Clarion-Goldfield (247), completed the field. 

Hampton-Dumont ran without a complete team.

Lions earn All-State Baseball recognition

 

The Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2013 All-State Baseball selections Aug. 6, naming Clear Lake’s Gavin Sheakley as captain of the Class 3A All-State Baseball Team and placing teammate Mitch Keeran on the Third Team.

G-H/V opens District play with a win; fall in second game

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls advanced in the Class 3A District competition with a win over Forest City.  Unfortunately, the season ended for the team as it fell to Estherville Lincoln Central in the second round of District play.

G-H/V softball team drops two

 

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura softball team competed in a tournament at Lake Mills on Saturday, June 1.   

Central Springs 12, G-H/V 1

The Cardinals opened the Lake Mills tournament by facing Central Springs.  The Panthers rolled to a 12-1 victory.

G-H/V scored its lone run in the sixth inning when Grace Tusha knocked her sister, Maddie Tusha, in for the run.

Lions drop Sub-State tennis match to Spencer

 

The Clear Lake boys tennis team played Spencer in Sub-State tennis at Fort Dodge on Saturday, May 18.  Spencer won a hard fought match by the score of 5-3.  

The Lions split wins in individual play, with Sam Jones, Paul Raner and JJ Theobald each getting victories.

The match went to Spencer when they won two doubles matches.  Sam Jones and Luke Schiller were leading their doubles match 6-0, 4-2 when play was stopped.
