Firefighters battle early morning house fire

 

The Clear Lake Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire at 112 N. 5th St. just after 6 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6.  

Fire Chief Doug Meyers reports a person walking in the area reported the fire to the police department 

Fern Zinser celebrates 100 years

 

Family and friends gathering around Fern Zinser talked about their hopes of joining her in a very elite club-- those celebrating 100 years of life.  

“Let me know when you make it!” joked Fern, who turned 100 on Jan. 20.  

CLMS students are going i-tech

 

It’s like Christmas all over again for Clear Lake Middle School students.  This week, all 285 of Clear Lake’s sixth, seventh and eighth graders will receive a new individual Apple iPad for their personal use during the school year.

Officers respond to assault call

 

Suspect flees and is found at Opportunity Village

 

At approximately 2:50 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, the Clear Lake Police responded to 1010 Village Road in Clear Lake, after receiving a call from a 32-year old female who had been assaulted physically by her boyfriend and then threatened with a knife.

When officers arrived they found the victim to be suffering from non-life threatening injuries. She was not transported to the hospital. A knife was taken as evidence at the scene. 

Broken light fuels motorhome fire

At approximately 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, Clear Lake dispatch received a call about a motorhome on fire at 217 Asbury Drive, at the intersection of Asbury and Fletcher near DAR Park.

Iowa Dept. of Ag reaches settlement with Ventura Locker

 

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship has reached a settlement agreement and final order with Ventura Locker following an investigation into the business’ operations.  As part of the agreement the company’s license will be temporarily suspended from Feb. 1, 2013 to Feb. 28, 2013.

  According to Dustin Vande Hoef, Communications director for the Iowa Department of Agriculture, an employee of the Ventura Locker contacted the department on Nov. 30, 2011 alleging fraudulent practice by the custom exempt locker.

School day extended for G-H/V High School students

 

Effective this week, the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura High School will extend its class dismissal time to 3:25 p.m.  Previously classes were dismissed at 3:11 p.m.

Superintendent Tyler Williams explained the time change is necessary to address two areas of concern: the amount of time studets were on the bus at the end of the day, and lengthening the time students are given to eat lunch.

The change will not effect students at the Middle or Elementary Schools in Ventura.  The end of the school day will stay the same in Ventura.

Contest winner

Finnegan presented Keith with a KitchenAid mixer following a drawing from all those who submitted recipes for the upcoming Clear Lake Mirror-Reporter Cookbook.  The cookbook will be available in time for the holidays.  -Reporter photo

Chamber readies plan for fireworks funding campaign

 

Since 2010, the Clear Lake Area Chamber has been planning and strategizing how to address the future funding of the Fireworks Display, according to Executive Director Tim Coffey.

Its historical significance to the community both as a multi-generational tradition and its economic impact has concerned the Chamber for many years.  With the passing of Arlene Hughes, a major fireworks benefactor, 

concern was raised about the Chamber’s ability to successfully raise the needed annual funds for future fireworks displays.
