City signs ‘Great Places’ agreement to facilitate Surf District improvements

As part of its designation as one of “Iowa Great Places,” the Clear Lake City Council has approved an agreement to provide matching funds to the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs to provide for improvements in the Surf Ballroom District.

The city and North Iowa Cultural Center and Museum, associated with the Surf, co-submitted an application for Iowa Great Places consideration.   Grant funding was awarded in the amount of $101,000 to complete a series of projects identified in the plan submitted as part of the application process.

Three candidates vying for District 2 Supervisor

Voters will head to the polls Tuesday to choose a new District 2 County Supervisor.  The victor will replace Bob Amosson, who is stepping down after winning the position in 2006 and 2010.  

The names of three candidates will appear on the ballot after an unusual June primary.  

Lions ready for playoff run; top GHV Cardinals 42-0

Top ranked Clear Lake wrapped up a perfect regular season and is ready to compete in its 17th straight play-off game tonight (Wednesday, Oct. 29) to start the journey toward a Class 2A State title.  The Lions will face Estherville-Lincoln Central, who they defeated 54-27 back on Sept.

GHV boys win State Qualifying Meet; Smith places first

Storbeck and Jones move on to State Cross Country Meet

Clear Lake runners saved their best races of the year for when it counted most.  Two Lions, freshman Gretchen Jones and senior Tanner Storbeck, will compete at Saturday’s State Meet as a result of their top 10 finishes at the State Qualifying Meet held Thursday at New Hampton.

The Lion boys finished fifth as a team, while the girls were seventh in the 15-school meet.  The top three teams and 10 individuals advance to State at Fort Dodge Saturday, Nov. 1.

GHV volleyball team battles to a victory over Hampton-Dumont

It was a fight from beginning to the end when the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team took on Hampton- Dumont on Thursday, Oct. 23, at Hampton.

“Thursday’s match was an opportunity to play volleyball when things weren’t clicking on our side,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.  “Their aggressive serves and scrappy defense kept us from running a controlled offense.”

CL cheerleaders to perform

The community is invited to come support the Clear Lake Cheerleading Competition Squad as they prepare for the 2014 Iowa State Cheerleading Competition. The squad will perform their routine for the public on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 5:30 p.m. in the Clear Lake High School Gymnasium.

Clear Lake tops Hampton-Dumont in final game of regular season

The final game of Clear Lake’s regular volleyball season Tuesday, Oct. 21, was dubbed “pink out” to raise breast cancer awareness.  The Lions played lights out and topped Hampton-Dumont, 3-1.

Beverly Lechner

 Beverly Ann Lechner, 74, of Rockwell, Iowa, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Due to her wishes she will be cremated.

Marcele Kottman

Marcele Marjorie (Pals) Kottman, 92, formerly of Thornton, Iowa, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, at the Rehabilitation Center, of Hampton, Iowa.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Oct. 25, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Thornton, with Rev. Rhea Evanson officiating.    Interment was at the Pleasantview Cemetery, Thornton.  Memorials may be given to the Marcele Kottman Memorial Fund.
