Thomas J. Martin, 79, of Mason City, Iowa, died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012 at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. 4th St., Clear Lake.  Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, where full military honors will be provided by the Clear Lake VFW. 

Visitation will be held Wednesday morning from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert Peterson

 

Robert E. Peterson, Spencer, Iowa, passed away suddenly at Riverview Terrace Assisted Living on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012.

Graveside services were held on Friday, Oct. 5, at Laurens Cemetery, Laurens, Iowa.

Robert Emanuel Peterson, son of Gustav and Christine Peterson, was raised on the family farm by Albert 

Clear Lake pounds the Comets 44-7

The Clear Lake Lions heated up an otherwise cold night at Lions Field Friday.  The Lions pounded Charles City 44-7 for a Class 3A, District 3 victory.  The win improved the Lions to 3-1 in the District and 5-2 overall.  The Comets remained winless, 0-4, 0-7.

 

G-H/V/WH cross country teams compete in Dick Bell Invitational

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura/West Hancock cross country team competed in the Dick Bell Invitational held Tuesday, Oct. 2, in Eagle Grove.

“This meet gave us a chance to run against several teams that we will see at the State Qualifying Meet 

that will be in Spencer on Oct. 18, so it gave us a chance to see where we need to be at that time,” said Coach Jeff Short.

CL cross country teams work on running strategies

 

 

Clear Lake’s cross country team are continuing to improve their times and running strategies heading into the stretch of the high school cross country season.  Last week the Lions were at Eagle Grove to compete in an 11-team meet.  The Lions were slated to compete in the North Central Conference meet Tuesday, Oct. 9.  Those results will appear in next week’s Mirror-Reporter.

No one was breathing easy during the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura football game Friday night until the final second ticked off the clock.  The Cardinals were able to hold a one-point advantage for a 21-20 win over South Central Calhoun in Class 2A, District 2 play.

G-H/V volleyball falls to Green Devils in Conference Tournament

 

After falling to the Osage Green Devils in the conference season opener, the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura volleyball team was looking forward to a rematch at the North Iowa Conference Tournament held on Monday, Oct. 1, in Garner.  Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the outcome was the same, with the Green Devils winning the match, 30-28, 25-10 and 26-24.

“We simply didn’t play well against them back in August and we wanted an opportunity to prove we were a better ball team,” said Coach Tracy Schmidt.

Lions keeping pace with conference leaders

 

The Lions roared back to earn a five game victory at Algona Thursday, improving their record to 5-2 and keeping pace with the leaders in the North Central Conference.

The Lions lost the opening game at Algona, 25-23, but came back to win the next two, 25-20, 25-17.  The Bulldogs forced a fifth game by posting a 25-20 win, but the Lions won the final game, 15-11.
