Ventura lands five players on All-District lists

Five members of the 2011 Ventura football team were named to All-District teams for District 3.
    Seniors Joel Watson and Ryan Schmitz earned First Team honors.  Watson was named First Team Receiver, while Schmitz earned First Team Quarterback.
    Schmitz led the district in passing yards and passing touchdowns.  He set the single season record at Ventura passing for 1,736 yards.  He also had 1,263 rushing yards. 

He accounted for 2,999 yards of total offense.
    “Ryan worked extremely hard in the off-season and came back strong this year after suffering a serious leg injury last season,” said Coach Mark Pueggel.  “He was very determined this season and I am proud of the way he played.”
    Watson had 941 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns.  He led the district in receptions and receiving yardage.  He was also strong on defense, collecting 164 tackles by the end of the regular season.  He led the district in tackles and was second in the state in tackles for 8-player football.
    “Joel had a great season on both offense and defense.  He was a good example to our younger kids and he has earned all of his success.  He is one of the most versatile players I have ever coached.  He can play a number of positions on either side of the ball and he does a great job at it.”
