Cardinal girls win NIC Meet

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura girls really ended the week on an upswing.  The team captured the North Iowa Conference championship for the third year in a row.

Bishop Garrigan Triangular

The GHV girl’s golf team was expecting to score behind Humboldt and Bishop Garrigan at a triangular held at Spring Valley Golf Course on Thursday, May 7.  The meet was about more than picking up wins,.  It was about preparing for the North Iowa Conference Meet which was held at the Spring Valley Course on Monday, May 11.

“I’m hoping the exposure to the course will pay off at the tournament,” said Coach Todd Greiman.

Humboldt won the triangular with a 199.  Bishop Garrigan carded a 210 and GHV was only three strokes behind with a 213.

The top three scorers for the Cardinals were all very close.  Bailee Frayne led the way with a 50, followed by Madee Hejna and Kyleigh Slaichert, with a 51 and 52 respectively.  Elly Johnston rounded out the score with a 60.  Also competing was Rachel Enright with a 63 and Paige Penning had a 65.

 

NIC Meet

The GHV girls were all smiles as the brought home the North Iowa Conference title for the third year in a row.  In addition to the team championship, freshman Bailee Frayne was the meet medalist.

“The girls were able to put the cold temperatures and strong winds out of their minds and perform admirably on a difficult course,” said Coach Todd Greiman.

GHV won by 13 strokes over runner-up Bishop Garrigan.  The Cardinals finished with a team score of 400, followed by B-G with 413 and Osage was third with 425.  Eleven teams competed in the meet.

Frayne led the pack with a 43-51-94 were medalist honors.

“Bailee was able to recover from a disappointing first three holes to earn the individual medal,” said Greiman.

Madee Hejna and Kyleigh Slaichert also had success, finishing in fourth and seventh respectively.  Hejna ended with a 48-49-97 and Slaichert carded a 51-49-100.  Elly Johnston was 14th with a 54-55-109.  First place through 15th place all considered “All Conference” players and earn individual medals.

Rachel Enright finished with a 58-54-112 and Paige Penning carded a 62-60-122.

The team will play in the first round of the Class 3A Regional Tournament on Monday, May 18, at Clarion.

“Clarion will be the obvious favorite on their home class, with Clear Lake and us expected to compete for the runner-up spot,” said Greiman.
