A week of ups and downs for Cardinal softball team
It was a busy week of ups and downs for the Garner-Hayfield/Ventura softball team. They picked up some wins and some losses playing seven games last week.
B-K 6, GHV 1
B-K 10, GHV 3
The week started slow for the Cardinals. They hosted Belmond-Klemme in a double header on Monday, June 1. The Broncos won both games, 10-3, and 6-1.
In the 6-1 loss, Brooklynn Ossman pitched the entire game, giving up 11 hits, walking two and striking out four.
Mackenzie Van Gerpen scored the lone run for the Cards.
Grace Tusha had the only hit for GHV and she stole one base. Mackenzie Van Gerpen collected two stolen bases in the game.
“We are really fortunate this year to have a lot of great athletes who can contribute in a variety of ways,” said Coach Christi Weiser.
The Cardinals scored three runs in the next game, but still fell short. Abby Kale scored two runs for GHV, and Katie Oetken scored the other.
Oetken had a good night at the plate, collecting three hits for the Cards, with one being a triple. Collecting one hit apiece was Tiara Van Gerpen, Ossman and Megan Oetken.
Tusha led the team in stolen bases with two. Tiara Van Gerpen, Kale, and Katie Oetken each had one stolen base.
Pitching duties were split between Ossman and Jillian Heitland. Ossman took the loss. She gave up five hits, six runs, walked two and struck out two. Heitland gave up four hits and four runs. She walked one and struck out two.
North Union 14, GHV 0
The Cardinals met a tough opponent on Wednesday, June 3, when they faced North Union at home. GHV lost to the power house, 14-0.
“We struggled against North Union,” said Coach Christi Weiser. “We are working right now to find that right group that meshes together well, but the kids are learning and working all day everyday.”
Pitcher Brooklynn Ossman took the loss on the mound. Ossman gave up 15 hits, including two homeruns.
Grace Tusha and Mackenzie Van Gerpen were the only GHV players to get a hit off North Union pitcher Peyton Olson.
Humboldt 14, GHV 4
It was a tough night on the road, when the Cardinals traveled to Humboldt on Thursday, June 4. Humboldt pounded out 13 hits and won the contest, 14-4.
Scoring one run apiece was Brooklyn Ossman, Grace Tusha, Miranda Jackson and Jacki Van Oort. Payton Barrack recorded an RBI.
The Cardinals speed was evident in the game with Tusha, Jackson and Ossman all picking up two stolen bases. Mackenzie Van Gerpen and Van Oort had one apiece.
Jillian Heitland collected the loss. She pitched 3.67 innings. She gave up seven hits and nine runs. She walked two and struck out three. Bailee Pitzenberger provided pitching relief. She have up six hits and five runs. She walked one.
GHV 4, Bishop Garrigan 3
The tide turned for the Cardinals when they traveled to Algona on Friday, June 5, to face Bishop Garrigan. GHV picked up a one run victory, 4-3.
“The girls battled their way to a really good North Iowa Conference win against Bishop Garrigan,” said Coach Christi Weiser.
Brooklynn Ossman pitched the entire game. She gave up eight hits and struck out six batters.
Tiara Van Gerpen was on her game Friday night, as she scored two of the four runs and was able to steal three bases. Mackenzie Van Gerpen carried the big stick for the night, hitting two doubles and bringing in one runner. Mallory Van Oort also had a good night, smacking a double that brought in two runners. She also scored a run. Sydney Childress also scored for the Cards.
Payton Bamrick hit a double and Ossman also had a hit.
Miranda Jackson had three stolen bases, while Ossman had two and Childress and Abby Kale each had one .
Lake Mills Tournament
The Cardinals split two games at the Lake Mills tournament played on Saturday, June 6. GHV beat Riceville, 10-3, but fell to Central Springs, 9-6.
It was a tough loss to Central Springs, but a solid win for us against Riceville,” said Coach Christi Weiser.
Against Central Springs, the Cardinals just couldn’t find the groove on the mound. Brooklynn Ossman took the loss, pitching two innings. She gave up four hits and three runs and walked four. Jillian Heitland pitched four innings, giving up five hits and four runs. She walked four and struck out one. Sydney Childress also took a turn on the mound, giving up two runs on two walks.
Mackenzie Van Gerpen led the team at the plate, collecting two hits, one being a homerun. She had three RBIs and scored one run.
Also collecting hits was Miranda Jackson, with two hits, and Tiara Van Gerpen, Brooklynn Ossman and Jacki Van Oort all getting one hit apiece.
Tiara Van Gerpen scored two runs. Jackson, Mallory Van Oort and Ossman rounded out the scoring.
The Cardinals knocked out 10 hits and collected 10 runs to beat Riceville.
Payton Bamrick led the team at the plate with three hits, three RBIs and one run. Miranda Jackson also had a good game with two hits, one being a double, and she collected four RBIs. Tiara Van Gerpen had one hit, scored two runs and led the team with three stolen bases.
Ossman pitched all four innings to collect the win. She gave up four hits, struck out two and walked one.
“I’m really excited about the big steps we’ve taken in just one short week,” said Weiser.
