99 Years Ago May 1916
Mrs. Willett Taylor and her mother, Mrs. Bieber, were overcome Friday by the smoke and gas coming from an asphalt mixer located near the electric depot. The Taylor home is near and the wind in such a direction that the gases were carried where they were working outdoors. They immediately became unconscious and it was some time before they were revived.
A heavy rain the first part of the week put a stop to the corn planting. There does not seem to be over half the corn planted as yet. The farmers can’t catch a break.
Diphtheria prevails near Fertile. Two children have died and schools have been closed there and in Hanlontown.
