The Clear Lake girls slipped to 0-10 last week with four losses.

Humboldt 17, CL 2 (6)

Humboldt capitalized on Lion errors and rolled to a 17-2 North Central Conference victory Monday, June 8.

“Errors cost us a lot,” said Coach Megan Young.  “Humboldt hit the gaps, but we made many errors to help them.  The girls continue to strive for perfection.  Its hard to make them see that they are doing things well.  We continue to work on coming together to play a complete game.”

The Lions had five hits in the game, with Michala Niles providing two.  Tori Fyfe had the only extra base hit for the Lions, a triple which scored a run.  Sara Buehler also picked up an RBI with a hit.

The Lions trailed 8-2 after four innings and held the Wildcats scoreless in the fifth.  A nine-run sixth broke the game open.

Sophomore Kiersten Baalson was on the mound for the Lions.  She surrendered five hits and walked five in two innings pitched.   One of the eight runs scored against her was earned.  Reagan Brackey pitched four innings.  She gave up 10 hits and walked two.

Emmetsburg Tournament

R-A 12, CL 6

The Lions were at the Emmetsburg Tournament Saturday for some non-conference games.

In the first game, the Lions jumped out to a 5-0 lead over Ruthven-Ayrshire, but A-R battled back to take the lead in the fourth inning and then erupted for five runs in the fifth to get a 12-6 win.

“We cleaned up the defensive errors, but couldn’t get the hits when we needed them,” said Coach Young.  “We had runners in scoring position, but couldn’t capitalize on that.”

Niles again had multiple hits.  She reached base on two singles and scored twice.  Fyfe picked up two RBIs on one hit. Buehler also had two RBIs, while Michaela Ouverson and Chloe Mueller each had one.

Baalson was the pitcher of record.  She gave up 12 runs on 13 hits in four innings pitched.  She struck out three and walked seven.  Reagan Brackey came in for one inning and walked two.

Emmetsburg 4, CL 0

The Lions corrected their fielding errors, but lost their offense in a game with Emmetsburg.

The host team used 10 hits to score their runs, while the Lions were held to five.  Niles, Fyfe, Ouverson, Erin O’Tool and Carney Frahm reached base on singles. O’Tool also had a stolen base.

“We were able to keep our errors to three and get some hits.  Offensively we still need to strengthen our bats,” said the coach.
