Carew and Hartnett also compete for Clear Lake
The state championships just keep coming for Clear Lake athletes this spring.
Emily Snelling and Dane Waldron won the Iowa High School State Co-Ed Golf championship Tuesday, June 9, at Cedar Pointe Golf Course in Boone. The duo, who each won an individual state title this year, posted an amazing 10-stroke victory, shooting a four-under par 68. The team of Courtney Snyder and Mitchell Ludwig, from Kuemper Catholic, and Kortney Orr and Chase Finke, from Waterloo Columbus were second and third with a score of 78.

“Emily and Dane, WOW! Having two state champs on the same team is one that you don’t get to see very often, and they made use of their abilities that day,” said Clear Lake girls golf coach Adam Brinkman.
The dynamic duo had a stretch of five birdies in a row to put themselves at five-under after nine holes.
“They lost a little momentum after getting into a bunker and taking a double bogey, but they made up for it on a short par five hole 18. With Emily’s long hitting ability, she was able to put Dane 110-yards out on a par five, which makes the scoring a lot easier,” said Brinkman. “The pair worked together through the great shots and the bad ones, and were able to shoot low despite the soaring heat. Coming off both of their individual state titles, the pair has been playing some of the best golf they have played all season, and they both would say that they wished the season wasn’t over.”
Waldron finished his career with two co-ed State titles. He is going to be missed on the Lions’ roster next season, but will play for Northwestern College. Snelling will be heading into her junior season next year, looking to make even bigger marks on her career.
Another Clear Lake High School team, seniors Maddy Hartnett and Jon Carew finished in a pack of golfers with a score of 90. They were 35th overall.
“Maddy and Jon didn’t play their best, but it was all about having fun during their last ever high school event. After about six or seven holes the pair was only two-over, so they started off playing very well, but after a couple unlucky breaks they couldn’t keep the momentum going,” said Brinkman.
GHV sends two teams to Co-Ed Golf Championship
The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura team of Kyleigh Slaichert, a junior, and Grady Umbarger, a sophomore, carded an 87 to place 26th, while Bailee Frayne and Matthew Heinemann, both freshmen from GHV, recorded an 88 to finish in 30th.
