Cardinals top North Iowa and Eagle Grove

The Garner-Hayfield/Ventura baseball team split six games in action last week,  moving their overall record to 8-17.

GHV 2, North Iowa 0

GHV 15, North Iowa 5

The Cardinals picked up a pair of North Iowa Conference wins against North Iowa on Monday, June 29.  GHV won the first game, 2-0, and the nightcap, 15-5.

Payton James was the winning pitcher in the first game, throwing seven strikes in seven innings.  He gave up only four hits in the game.

James smacked a double that got Harley Forry across the plate.  Nick Joynt also connected on a double and also drove in Forry.  Forry and Ryan Meyers both had singles.

The fifth inning was huge for the Cardinals in the second game, with nine runs scored.

Ryley Kozisek and Connor Burke led the offense.  Kozisek had a hit that brought in four runners.  He also scored two runs. Burke had two hits, one being a triple.  He had two RBIs and scored two runs.  Holden Hutcheson smacked a double that brought in three runs.  He also scored three runs for the Cards.

James, Forry and Burke each had two stolen bases.

Meyers earned the win, pitching all six innings.  He struck out four and walked four.  He gave up eight hits.

GHV 5, Eagle Grove 3

The Cardinals started strong and ended strong in a 5-3 win over Eagle Grove on Wednesday, July 1.  GHV scored three runs in the first inning and two runs in the seventh inning to capture the victory.

Colton Schroeder was the winning pitcher, pitching all seven innings.  He struck out one batter and walked another.  He allowed only four hits in the game.

GHV connected on a total of eight hits.  Joynt, James and Hutcheson all connected on two hits apiece.  Forry and Meyers each had one hit.

James and Hutcheson had one RBI each.

Forry scored two of the Cardinal’s five runs, while Joynt, James and Chase Theobald all crossed the plate once.

James and Forry had one stolen base apiece.

Clear Lake 17, GHV 1

It was a tough night for the Cardinals when they traveled to Clear Lake to face the 6th ranked Lions on Thursday, July 2.  Clear Lake lived up to their ranking, as they downed GHV 17-1.

The Lions dominated in the second inning, scoring 16 runs.  The game was over in four innings.

Kaleb Bruggerman took the loss on the mound for the Cardinals.  He walked five, gave up four hits and allowed 12 runs.  Holden Hutcheson also saw time on the mound.  He struck out one, walked one, gave up four hits and five runs.

GHV managed four hits against a tough Clear Lake pitcher.  Hutcheson had two hits and scored the Cardinal’s lone run

Lake Mills 7, GHV 6

GHV hosted Lake Mills on Friday, July 3, in a game that came down to the end.   

The game was knotted after the sixth inning, 6-6.  Unfortunately for GHV, Lake Mills got one run home in the seventh inning to win the game, 7-6.

The Cardinal bats were hot, with the team collecting 10 hits.  Collecting two hits apiece were Joynt, James, Kozisek and Meyers.  Burke and Hutcheson each had a single.  Hutchinson’s hit was a double.  Kozisek led the team in RBIs with three.  Colton Schroeder, Meyers and Bamrick also had RBIs.

James and Hutcheson got across the plate twice for the Cards, while Schroeder and Theobald each scored once.

James was the losing pitcher.  He pitched only one inning, throwing one strike and giving up two hits.  Kozisek and Meyers also pitched.  Kozisek pitched four innings.  He walked three, allowed five hits and six runs.  Meyers allowed two hits and one run.

The Cardinals begin Class 2A District 4 play on Saturday, July 11.  They play Lake Mills at Clear Lake in a 5 p.m. game.
