Colon now in training for Team USA
Former Clear Lake prep and University of Northern Iowa All-American wrestler Joe Colon is now in Colorado Springs, Colo. for Team USA wrestling’s training camp. The camp is held in preparation for the World Championships set for Sept. 7-12 in Las Vegas, Nev.
Colon, now a member of the Panther Wrestling Club (Colon is also affliated with the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club), by virtue of his second-place to Tony Ramos at the U.S World Team trials in Madison, Wis. in June at 57KG (125.5 pounds), earned a spot on the U.S. National team. He will only compete if Ramos gets hurt.
Colon says he intends to be ready to wrestle if needed, and use the camp as experience. His ultimate goal is to qualify in April in Iowa City at the U.S. Olympic trials for the 2016 Rio Games.
“Next year will be the biggest year of my life, ever. It is the Olympics. I’m going to try to make that team,” he said.
In addition to his competitions here in the states over the past two years, Colon has also wrestled in Turkey, Iran and Cuba.
