Busy week for the Cardinals

It was a busy week for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura volleyball team. The team hosted Belmond-Klemme on Tuesday, traveled to Bishop Garrigan on Thursday and competed in the Belmond-Klemme Tournament on Saturday.
B-K 3, GHV 0
The Cardinals hosted the Broncos on Tuesday, Sept. 8. Although GHV put up a good fights, they couldn’t pull off a win.
B-K picked up wins in both the first and second games with the same score, 25-17. The Broncos went on to win the third set, 25-19.
Hannah Lau led the team, collecting eight kills. She also had an assisted block and five digs.
Also recording kills for the Cardinals was Carlie Knutson with six, Taylor Gerdes knocked down four and Mackenzie Van Gerpen had two.
Sydney Childress led the team in assists with 11. Bailee Frayne added three.
Van Gerpen led the team on defense with six digs. Miranda Jackson dug up four, while Knutson and Jacki Van Oort each had three digs.
Van Oort and Payton Bamrick had two ace serves apiece.
B-G 3, GHV 1
It was a strong start for the Cardinals, but they couldn’t maintain intensity and fell to Bishop Garrigan, 3-1, on Thursday, Sept. 10.
GHV came out ready to go and picked up the first win, 25-21. The second game was a close one, with the Golden Bears squeaking out a two point victory, 26-24. The third was all Bishop Garrigan, 25-11. The Cardinals rallied for the final game, but couldn’t close the deal and fell, 25-21.
“The girls started out strong in the first set,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “We need to bring that level of intensity throughout the entire match.”
Mackenzie Van Gerpen and Hannah Lau were hot at the net, with Van Gerpen collecting 14 kills and Lau recorded 12. Lau also had two blocks and Van Gerpen had one. Jacki Van Oort and Katie Rasmuson had six and four kills respectively.
Bailee Frayne recorded 24 assists to lead the team. Sydney Childress added seven assists.
Miranda Jackson led the team in digs recordings 15. Lau added 10, while Van Gerpen had nine and Van Oort added seven digs.
Van Oort led the team at the service line, recording 16 points on serve and two aces. Lau had six points on serve and two aces, while Van Gerpen had seven points on serve and one ace.
B-K Tournament
Although the Cardinals didn’t make it out of pool play at the Belmond-Klemme Tournament on Saturday, they made tremendous improvements as a team.
“We made some changes to our line-up and the girls responded very well,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “The girls competed throughout the entire matches as they brought a strong offense.”
GHV won the first match of the tournament against West Hancock with scores of 21-16 and 21-8. Mackenzie Van Gerpen and Hannah Lau again led the way. Lau recorded six kills, 1.5 blocks, three digs and two ace serves. Van Gerpen recorded five kills and three digs. Sydney Childress had 13 assists to lead the team. Payton Bamrick was strong at the service line with three ace serves.
The Cardinals dropped the second match to West Fork, 21-14, 21-17. Lau recorded 10 kills and two blocked shots. Van Gerpen led the way on defense with 10 digs. She also contributed seven kills. Childress again led the team on assists with 19.
GHV rallied in the third match of the tournament and beat Iowa Falls-Alden. They won the first set, 23-21, dropped the second, 21-14, and came back and won the third, 16-14. Van Gerpen had a great match, recording 14 kills and 11 digs, while Lau had 11 kills and eight digs. Jacki Van Oort had three kills, five digs and one ace serve. Childress led the team in assists with 24.
The team is home on Thursday, Sept. 17. The JJV and JV teams take the court at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
