GHV X-C teams compete at Ballard

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys cross country team earned runner-up honors at the Ballard meet on Monday, Sept. 14, while the girls team finished sixth.

The boys were only three points away from the winner of the meet, Nodaway Valley, who finished with 71 points.  Eagle Grove was third with 87 points.  Eleven teams competed in the meet.

Logan Dalbeck, Reece Smith and Derek Brown finished in a pack, collecting the second, third and fourth place finishes.  Dalbeck ran the course in 17:31, followed by Smith in 17:32 and Brown in 17:40.  Ray Cataldo was 18th with a time of 18:23.  Also running varsity was Andrew Schreur, 47th, in 19:56.  Jacob Meier, 56th, in 20:10; and Jared Graham, 61st, in 20:15.

The girl’s team scored 185 points.  Gilbert won the meet with 30 points, followed by North Polk with 60 points and Humboldt with 66 points.

Maria Gonzalez led the girls team with a time of 23:35, good for 23rd place.  Rebekah Larson was 35th with a time of 25:01, while Morgan Graham was 39th in 25:11 and Kaylee Hudspeth was 42nd in 25:34.  Also running varsity was Emma Whelan, 46th, 25:48; Nicole Upmeyer, 53rd, 26:53 and Hannah Wellik, 55th, 27:34.

“I thought that we ran very well as a team,” said Coach Jeff Short.  “We had several personal records at this meet.  I believe that we are on track to be where we need to be at the end of the year.  It is fun to see the time continue to go down, which is an indication that our hard work as a team is paying off.”
