GHV X-C team post personal bests; boys win H-D meet

It was a good week for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura cross country teams.  Both teams are recording personal best times and the boys’ team picked up a win and a second place finish.

GHV Meet

It was a day of personal records for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura cross country teams when they competed in their home meet on Monday, Sept. 28.  All boys and girls varsity runners recorded personal best times at the meet.

“The runners did a great job.  We had over 24 runners record personal bests at this meet,” said Coach Jeff Short.

It all paid off for the boys, who captured first place in the four-team competition with 23 points.  GHV had five runners in the top 10.  Reece Smith led the way with a second place finish in 16:29.  He was followed by Logan Dalbeck, Derek Brown and Ray Cataldo, who placed third, fourth and fifth respectively.  Dalbeck ran the race in 16:54, Brown’s time was 17:03 and Cataldo clocked a 17:15.  Austin Siegrist placed ninth with a time of 17:58.  Jacob Meier also ran a good race in a time of 18:40, good for 13th place.

The girls team placed fourth in the eight-team competition with 124 points.  Maria Gonzalez was the top runner with a time of 21:18.  She placed 14th.  Kaylee Hudspeth, Morgan Graham and Rebekah Larson were neck-and-neck, finishing in 24th, 25th and 26th place.  Hudspeth ran the course in 23:07, while Graham finished in 23:27 and Larson was one second behind with a 23:28.  Also running varsity was Nicole Upmeyer, 35th, 25:10; Hannah Wellik, 37th, 25:14, and Rachel Sokol, 38th, 25:15.

JV Results

GHV picked up the top two spots in the JV boys race.  Mason Wirtz won the race with a time of 18:53.  Parker Schneiders was second with a time of 19:00.  Also placing in the JV race was Andrew Schreur, 20th, with a time of 19:25 and Nathan Larson was 23rd with a time of 19:38.

Also competing in the boys JV race was Andrew Dornbier, Daniel Schreur, Austin Case, Derek Anderson, Theo Schoneman, Tyler Obermann, Dalton Hawe, Lucas Rayhons, Patrick Terhark, McKinley Hawe, Austin Mohlis, Matt Barickman and Derek Neuberger.

Paige Rasmusen was the only girl to run in the JV race.  She placed 16th with a time of 27:49.

Hampton-Dumont Meet

It was a great day for the GHV boys, when the cross country teams traveled to Hampton-Dumont on Thursday, Oct. 1.  With their number one runner back in the line-up, the boys cruised to an easy first place finish.  The boys outdistanced the second place team by 40 points.  The Cardinals won with 22 points, followed by West Fork with 62 and Osage with 65 points.  Eleven teams competed in the meet.

Chase Smith, who has been out of the line-up with an injury, was back in action and paced the team with a first place finish in a time of 16:15.  Right behind him were teammates Ray Cataldo, second, in 17:31, Logan Dalbeck, in third, with a time of 18:11 and Austin Siegrist was fifth in a time of 18:27.  Jacob Meier just missed placing in the top 10.  He was 11th with a time of 19:15.  Andrew Schreur was 25th with a time of 19:54 and Parker Schneiders was 40th with a time of 20:20.

The girls team placed fourth in a nine-team field with 125 points.  West Fork won the girl’s race with 32 points, followed by Osage with 36 points.

Maria Gonzalez finished in the top 10 with a ninth place finish in 21:36.  Rebekah Larson ran the course in 23:08, good for 23rd place.  Kaylee Hudspeth and Morgan Graham crossed the line in 26th and 27th place.  Hudspeth’s time was 23:26, while Graham’s was 23:27.  Rounding out the varsity runners was Hannah Wellik, 40th, 24:52, Rachel Sokol, 41st, 24:55, and Emma Whelan, 59th, 26:42.

JV Results

Ezra Marroquin won the JV boys race with a time of 19:02.  Nathan Larson was close behind, finishing in third place with a time of 20:17.

Also running JV was Daniel Schreur, 20:23; Derek Anderson, 20:23; Austin Case, 20:32; Lucas Rayhons, 20:32;  Tyler Obermann, 20:33; Dalton Hawe, 20:41;  Andrew Dornbier, 20:47;  Theo Schoneman, 20:48;  Patrick Terhark, 21:01; McKinley Hawe, 22:06; Austin Mohlis, 24:56 and Matt Barickman, 27:20.
