Mildred Baker
Mildred Baker, 97, of Clear Lake, went to her Heavenly Father on Friday, Oct. 16, 2015, at Oakwood Care Center, in Clear Lake.
She was born Feb. 14, 1918, in Garner, Iowa. She attended school in Hanlontown, Iowa, and graduated from McIntire High School in 1936.
Mildred married Donald Baker on Feb. 22, 1941, at the home of Donald’s parents in Ventura, Iowa. Mildred and Donald’s first date was on the Fourth of July where they enjoyed the carnival in Clear Lake.
Together they farmed in Ventura until 1946. They then moved to a farm north of Clear Lake and farmed there the rest of their lives.
In her early years, Mildred was a faithful member of Colonial Club, enjoyed reading Kitchen Klatter and Guidepost magazines, and tending to her very large vegetable garden. She took pride in canning hundreds of jars of her garden produce each year. In her later years, she became an Iowa Hawkeye basketball fan.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Lilly (Pierce) Meter; her brother, Charles; her sister, Phyllis; and an infant daughter, Doreen Marie.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Roger Baker; two sons, Wayne and Gene (Nancy) Baker, both of Clear Lake; two grandchildren, Josh (Charity) Baker, of Rockwell, Iowa and Julia (Jacob) Hansen, of Denver, Colo.; and three great-grandchildren, Andrew and Lily Baker, of Rockwell, and Eloise Hansen, of Denver.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Oakwood Care Center for their loving care of Mildred.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
