Chase Smith records one of the best times in Class 2A

With four runners finishing in the top 10, it is no surprise that the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boy’s cross country team captured the title and will be heading to the State Meet.

GHV senior Chase Smith recorded one of the best performances in the state with a time of 15:45, the top time for any Class 2A qualifier in the state.  Freshman Reece Smith finished in 16:26, good for fourth place.  Junior Logan Dalbeck was sixth in 16:34 and sophomore Ray Cataldo was 10th in 16:58.

The Cardinals finished the meet, held in Orange City,  with 43 points.  Unity Christian was second with 47 points and Eagle Grove also captured a State berth by finishing third with 98 points.

“The boys ran in the toughest 2A State qualifying meet in the state and they all ran very well, but we need to understand that the most important race is Saturday in Fort Dodge,” said Coach Jeff Short.  “They will be focusing on getting on the balcony, which means we need to finish as one of the top three teams.  I feel that they are very focused on the goals set last year at the State meet, where they missed the balcony by one place.”

The boys will compete at the State Cross Country meet on Saturday, Oct. 31, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course.  The race begins at 1 p.m.

Girls Results

The GHV girls finished in 11th place out of 12 teams at the Class 3A girls qualifying meet held in Spencer.

Humboldt won the meet with 51 points, followed by Sioux City Bishop Heelan with 59 points.  The Cardinals finished with 281 points.

“The girls ran in a very tough 3A State Qualifying Meet,” said Coach Jeff Short.  “We had several girls run the best times of the year, I feel they have progressed as much as any team that I have coached.”
