Three GHV volleyball players named to conference teams

Three members of the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura volleyball team earned recognition from the Top of Iowa Conference - West.  Mackenzie Van Gerpen and Hannah Lau, both juniors, were named to the Second Team, while Carlie Knutson, also a junior, earned Honorable Mention recognition.

Lau dominated at the net, with 212 kills on the season and 33 blocks.  She also led the team in defense with 115 digs and had 18 ace serves.

“Hannah’s ability to control the net is a major contribution to the team.  Her agility and strength allows her to put up a strong block and also be an aggressive hitter,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens.  “When Hannah was in the back row, she continued to be involved in the offense.”

Even though being out for injuries during the end of the season, Van Gerpen still posted some impressive stats.  She ended the year with 116 kills, 8.5 blocks, 106 digs and 11 ace serves.

“Mackenzie is a talented, all-around player.  While she does a phenomenal job of being an outside hitter, there were a few times she played middle.  She successfully stepped up and dominated both the front and back row,” said Steffens.

Knutson ended the year with 17 ace serves, 79 kills and 103 digs.

“Carlie was an all-around outside player.  Outside hitters get most of the out-of-system balls and on those situations she was able to take aggressive attacks and earn points for the team,” said Steffens.

The Cardinals ended the season with a 6-18 record.
