Remember When 12-9-2015

(Above) Emergency landing in 1990 - An airplane transporting two inmates to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center at Oakdale, Iowa, made an emergency landing in the median of Interstate 35 near Clear Lake on Dec. 24, 1990.  There were no injuries reported following the belly landing by pilot Shirley Pardum, of Mason City.  The airplane, owned by Dwyer Aircraft in Mason City, began having motor problems shortly after taking off from the Mason City Municipal Airport.

December 1990

On a day when midwesterners were fearing a predicted earthquake, a blizzard brought most activity in Iowa to a standstill.  The Clear Lake area received approximately 10” of snow, starting Sunday night and continuing into Monday.  High winds, sometimes gusted to 40 m.p.h. created whiteouts for drivers and made snowplowing difficult. For only the second time in 16 years, mail was not delivered outside of the downtown area.

The lake was declared frozen over on Tuesday, Dec. 4.  The last reading of the lake level was 31.44” below the spillway.

Karla Floy, daughter of Hattie Floy and the late Vernon Floy, married Steve Bacon on Aug. 25, 1990, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.  Bacon is the son of Larry and Bonnie Bacon, of Ventura.

A son, Cody Lane, was born Dec. 2, 1990, to Cole and Kimberly Christy, of Clear Lake.  Grandparents are Jim and Julie Hanson, of Clear Lake, and Gail and Dolores Christy, of Ottawa, Iowa.

Gary Miller has moved his State Farm Insurance business to a new location.  The office can now be found at 220 Highway 18.  With the cooperation of the weather and steady work from Keith Paulson Construction, Clear Lake, and others, Miller was able to move into the new office just three weeks after starting construction.

The Clear Lake wrestlers opened its season by claiming the team title at the Early Bird Tournament held in Manly.  All 13 of Clear Lake’s wrestlers placed in the top five of their weight class.  Sean Harlan, Chad Whitecotton, Shawn Zimmerman and Jason Salge all won titles for the Lions.  Ryan Ruppert and Kurt Vala both placed second.

Matt Freeseman, a member of the Clear Lake boys basketball team, was one of six players voted All-Tournament in the Waterloo Columbus Tournament.  The Lions lost both games at the tournament.

Kay Bacon, Clear Lake’s head girls basketball coach, said her team’s win over New Hampton was a total team effort.  The Lions pulled off a one point victory, 62-61. Molly McAllister and Jen Bartlet led the scoring with 14 points apiece.

Playing at the Cinema V is Clint Eastwood and Charlie Sheen in, “The Rookie.”  Also playing is “Pacific Heights.”

November 1965

On Sunday, Nov. 21, the temperature reached 55 degrees, or some 15 degrees above normal.  Last year at this time the temperature dropped to five below zero.

Pfc. Max Prescott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Prescott, is in Fitzsimmons Hospital, Denver, Colo., for treatment of wounds sustained in South Viet Nam.  Prescott was wounded Nov. 12 by mortar shrapnel.  He is a 1961 graduate of Clear Lake High School.

Playing at the Lake Theater is “Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine,” starring Vincent Price, Frankie Avalon and Susan Hart.

The Clear Lake boys basketball team won their season opener, 66-55, against Belmond.  Ken Grabinski led the Lions with 19-points.  Don Anderson and Bill Moresby had 17 and 14 points respectively.

December 1970

A freak of nature occurred Friday morning when “ice balls” floated to shore in front of the Loren Sadler home, 2709 S. Lakeview Dr.  Mrs. Sadler’s grandfather, Joe Factor, 86, of Mason City, spotted the ice formation and said in all his years at the lake, he had never seen anything like them.  Many balls were the size of basketballs.

Richard R. Lashier, superintendent of the Clear Lake schools, was named to the Hall of Fame honor roll during a program at he annual Sports Clinic of Northwest Iowa Coaches and Officials Association.  Cashier was one of five persons presented with a recognition plaque for his contribution to athletics in northwest Iowa.

About 800 people attended the TTT Charity Ball held Saturday at the Surf Ballroom.  Decorations included a huge decorated Christmas tree in the middle of the dance floor, a sleigh complete with Santa in the lobby and other trimmings.

November 1915

Wood alcohol for auto radiators is for sale at Havenhill & Grays.

Turkeys have been very scarce.  It has been only with great effort that the local dealers have secured a sufficient number to supply the Thanksgiving demand.  The price is also very high.

Fred Dawson and his wife had a narrow escape Saturday afternoon.  As they were driving into town, near the Milwaukee Depot, the team was frightened by the engine used by the pavers.  Both the occupants of the buggy were thrown out, badly frightened, but not seriously injured.

Congregational Fair and Supper will be held Friday.  The menu includes: chicken pie, mashed potatoes, brown gravy, cranberry sauce, buttered carrots, graham bread, rolls, mince pie, tea and coffee for 35¢.
