GHV wrestlers compete in triangular; Baker crowned champion at tournament

The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura wrestling team had a busy week, with a triangular on Thursday and a tournament on Saturday.

The Cardinals hosted West Hancock and Eagle Grove on Thursday, Dec. 3.  The Cardinals edged West Hancock, 40-39, and they fell to Eagle Grove, 52-24.  West Hancock beat Eagle Grove, 51-27.

GHV had three winners against Eagle Grove and one forfeit.  Colyn Schoneman pinned Brayden Lyman in 1:05 at 160 pounds.  Conner Shaw, who wrestles at 182, pinned Evan Anderson in 1:29.  At 195 pounds, Cade Baker pinned Austin Burgeon in :17.

“We did not wrestle our way against Eagle Grove,” said Coach Cory Jenniges.  “We let them dictate the matches and I think we looked past them.”

It was a tight match against West Hancock.  GHV had five winners and one forfeit to win the match.  At 113 pounds, Austin Case pinned J.J. Holland in 4:27.  Jace Pringnitz, 132, pinned Dalton Subject in 4:35.  Cody Kent won by fall in 1:46 against Reed Brown at 138 points.  John Hulbert pinned Jordi Rodriguez at 170 pounds in 5:48.   Shaw won his match by a 15-4 major decision against Jordan Weiland.

“Against West Hancock we took control of matches and wrestled to our capabilities.  We had to bump some kids up a weight to get the win and it paid off.  I don’t think West Hancock was expecting that,” said Jenniges.

On Saturday the team traveled to the Eagle Grove tournament, where the Cardinals finished in fifth place with 91-points.

A highlight of the tournament, was Cade Baker claiming the 182-pound title.  Baker won all five of his matches in the round-robin tournament.

Conner Shaw placed third for the Cardinals at 170 pounds.  He finished with a 3-2 record.  Grady Umbarger was also third at 195 pounds.
