Baker claims championship at N-P Tournament
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura wrestling team competed at the Nashua-Plainfield Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 12. Three individual wrestlers had a successful day, but as a team, the Cardinals struggled.
GHV placed sixth in the 10 team tournament with 91-points. MFL-Mar-Mac won the tournament with 236-points, followed by Nashua-Plainfield with 143-points.
“As a team we didn’t compete that well, as we had five open weights,” said Coach Cory Jenniges.
GHV’s Cade Baker claimed the championship at 182-pounds.
Also wrestling in the finals was Austin Case, at 106 pounds, and Colyn Schoneman, at 152-pounds. Both wrestlers placed second.
Jace Prignitz placed third at 126-pounds and Jon Hulbert was fourth at 160-pounds. Grady Umbarger was fifth at 195-pounds.
“The junior varsity boys performed well at the tournament,” said Jenniges.
Zach Eichmann got first place at 106-points and Tyler Nielson was second at heavyweight.
The Cardinals are 1-1 in the Top of Iowa Conference West Division.
On Thursday, Dec. 17, they are in a triangular with Forest City and Belmond-Klemme at Belmond. The meet begins at 6 p.m.
