The Clear Lake girls split decisions in two close North Central Conference contests last week, then dropped a non-conference tilt with 13th ranked (3A) Forest City, putting their record at 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the NCC.

CL 50, Algona 47

The Lions started the week strong, posting a 50-47 win over Algona Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Emily Snelling was a force for the Lions, putting in 27 points, grabbing a team-high seven rebounds and making five steals.  Snelling sunk five of eight free throw attempts to help seal the victory.

“I thought we did a good job defending tonight.  Emily was very active at both ends of the floor and had a really good night.  I’m pleased with where we are at for the first game out of break.  We looked a little sluggish but picked it up in the second half,” said Coach Bart Smith.

Chloe Mueller was also in double figures with 10 points.  The sophomore also had five rebounds and three assists.

Erin O’Tool and Jordyn Barragy each scored six points and Mckenna Backhaus added one.

Webster City 49, CL 47

Webster City outlasted the Lions in an NCC battle played Friday, Jan. 8, on the Lynx’s home court.

The Lynx held a slim 28-25 lead at the break, but the Lions came out strong in the third and outscored the home team, 15-10, to take a 40-38 advantage into the final eight minutes.

The Lynx shut the visitors down in the final period, outscoring them 11-7, to get the 49-47 win.

“We made to many mistakes late in the game to get this win,” said Coach Smith.  “Webster did a nice job defending us on the arc and not allowing us to penetrate and get open looks.  We had a great start in the first quarter but we need to do the little things better to extend the lead and finish a game.”

The Lynx also did a good job keeping the Lions off of the free throw line.  Clear Lake shot just seven free throws in the game, making four of them.

Jessica Faber had a strong night for the Lions, scoring 16 and making three steals.  Erin O’Tool added nine points and five rebounds.  Emily Snelling put in eight points and had five assists.

Jordyn Barragy was good for seven points and five rebounds, while Chloe Mueller scored five and made five assists.  Ellie Biebesheimer rounded out the scoring with two points.

Forest City 52, CL 37

The Indians outscored the Lions 18-1 after the halftime break on their way to a 52-37 non-conference victory.

The Lions got off to a good start and held a 13-6 lead after one quarter of play.  At halftime the Lions’ lead was five, 22-17.

“I thought we played three really good quarters, but had a really bad shooting quarter coming out of half time,” said Coach Bart Smith.  “I liked the looks we were getting in the third quarter, we just couldn’t connect.  We played really good defense in the first half and even only having one point in the third quarter we still were within nine points with in the fourth quarter, so I was happy that we continued to fight and play hard to the finish.”

Emily Snelling was the lone Lion to finish in double figures scoring.  The junior collected 17-points for the team before fouling out.  She also led the team with six steals and had four rebounds.

Jordyn Barragy finished with nine points and shared rebounding honors with Jessica Faber.  Each player had five.  Erin O’Tool put in seven points and had four rebounds.  Mckenna Backhaus contributed four points.

Chloe Mueller was held scoreless, but was credited with six assists and two steals.
