Lions third in eight-team race

Ryan Faught won his fourth North Central Conference title and helped the Clear Lake Lions to a third place finish at the NCC Tournament held Saturday. With his victory, Faught became one of only eight wrestlers to ever accomplish the four-time NCC feat in the 50 years of the tournament.  He claimed his title at 152-pounds. The senior recorded falls in the opening and semi-final rounds, then topped Humboldt’s Gus Arnold 4-0.  The win lifted Faught’s record to 34-6 on the year.

Ryan Leisure won his second title in the toughest weight class in the eight-team tourney.  Four wrestlers were ranked in the top eight at 138-pounds and Leisure won by major decision in both the semi finals and the finals.

The third NCC champion was freshman Eric Faught who won by fall in the finals at 106-pounds and remains undefeated on the year and ranked second in state.

Three other Lions made the finals, but lost.  Senior Kaleb Froiland pulled a big upset in the semi finals at 145-pounds with a 4-3 win over a 28-7 wrestler from Humboldt.  Froiland is 19-18. He lost to fourth ranked Brady Brott, of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, in the finals.  Ace Walton lost a close 6-5 decision at 195 and Kyle Willms lost to state ranked Cooper Lawson at heavyweight.

“We had a good day.  Our kids wrestled with energy and effort and that is how we judge our day,” said Coach Gary Weber.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows won their second straight conference tournament with 231 points, placing 11 of 14 wrestlers in the top three with two champions. Webster City was second with 205.5 points. The Lions finished third with 167.

Weber commented on the other place winners:

113: Jackson Hamlin, sixth place.  Jack gave it his all and wrestled all three matches very hard. He continues to improve.

120: Braxton Doebel, fifth place. Braxton had a big pin for fifth place, which was nice to see.

126: Ben Hillyer, fourth place.  Ben is making huge strides and did a nice job.

132: Will Kirshbaum, fourth place. Will was very close to making it to the finals. He is having a great sophomore year.

170: Dalton Grell, sixth place. Dalton has improved so much in the last two months. He has two more years.

182: Kade Hambly. Kade had a very good day. He took fifth place and he is only a freshman wrestling juniors and seniors. He won 11-1 over a kid he lost to earlier in the year.

220: Spencer Christensen, fifth place.  Spence is also just a freshman. He beat a kid who was 10-7 to take fifth place.  It is very hard to wrestle

220 in ninth grade.
