Remember When 2-10-2016

(Above) Snowmobile Rally, 1966 - The flag fell to start one of the several snowmobile races held in January 1966 in front of the Sea Wall.  This was the first annual Snowmobile Rally.  Entries came from Clear Lake and several other communities around the state.  The Rally was sponsored by the Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce and several Clear Lake residents.

February 1991

The warm weather may have North Iowans thinking of spring, but organizers of Winterfest ’91 are planning a salute to winter this Saturday at McIntosh Woods State Park, Ventura.  Gary Duesenberry is the chairman of the event and park ranger at McIntosh.  He said the ice-skating is very questionable, but aside from that everything should be fine.

The North Iowa Business and Technology Center has announced that O’Neill Enterprises is now leasing space at the business incubator located on S. 8th St.

On Dec. 4, 1990, Michael Patrick Weigel was called to active duty to support Operation Desert Shield/Storm.  Weigel, a May 1990 graduate of Clear Lake High School, enlisted in the Army National Guard.  He received training as a military policeman for nine weeks.  He is the son of Betty Weigel and the late G. Patrick Weigel.

Rev. David Burling will be installed as Director of Spiritual Growth at Zion Lutheran Church.

The Clear Lake boys basketball team maintained their perfect record in play last week, surviving one close contest and running away with another.  The team topped Iowa Falls, 66-65.  The pounded Clarion, 91-18.  Matt Freeseman led the team in both games with 26 and 25 points respectively.

The Clear Lake wrestling team took advantage of a sizable crowd on Parent’s Night when they upset ninth ranked Humboldt in class 2A action, 28-20.  The win gave the Lions a 5-2 record in conference, their best since the 1976 season when that team posted an identical 5-2 mark.

The Ventura girls avenged an earlier loss to Sheffield-Chapin/Meservey-Thornton, when they put together a 46-41 victory.  Megan Coe came away with 19-points and Jenni Fey added 15.

Grocery specials for the week at Easter’s Super Valu include: Kelloggs Corn Flakes, 18 oz., $1.29; Keebler Pretzels, 8.5 oz., 89¢; California head lettuce, each, 59¢; Jeno’s Pizza Rolls, 6 oz., 79¢; Old Style Beer, 12-12 oz. cans, $4.09; Turkey Breast, lb., $1.59; and Boneless Ham, lb., $1.79.

February 1966

The Clear Lake School Board has acted favorably on a petition by the Mount Vernon School District, in Burchinal, to allow them to become a member of the Clear Lake School District.  A recent state law requires all school districts without a high school to join a district with a high school by April 1, or the County Board will place them in a school district.

The new pastor at Zion Lutheran Church, Murley A. Severtson, will be installed on Sunday, Feb. 8.

The mercury skidded to 17 degrees below zero Sunday as Clear Lake’s cold wave continues into its second week.

Playing at the Lake Theater is Sean Connery in, “Thunderball.”  Here comes the biggest Bond of all.

January 1941

Tickets for the president’s birthday ball are being sold rapidly.  C.J. Fox has donated the use of the Surf for the ball.

Robert George skated on the ice to Mason City to visit his father who is ill in a hospital there.

John Rosalind gave instruction in chair caning before the Twentieth Century Club Thursday afternoon at the Legion Hall.  Some of the women spent their time working on pewter pounding.

Paul Ashland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Irving Ashland, who has been employed at the Allis Chalmers office at Mason City, has accepted a fine position with the Milwaukee Railroad in their office in Mitchell, S.D.

100 Years Ago

January 1916

There are a few boys in town who insist on shooting birds with what they call BB guns.  Parents who provide their sons with such weapons should give them effective advice concerning the proper use of a gun or they may shoot their eye out.

The cold wave of last week broke Iowa records for a period of 10 years.  During the blizzard of last week, the roof of a freight car on a rain running west from Algona, was lifted off by the gale and 15 cars went into the ditch.

Tom Pappas, of Mason City, was fined $4.35 last Friday for leaving a sweaty horse tied to a telephone pole until it nearly froze.
