Six Lion wrestlers moving on
Six Clear Lake grapplers qualified for the District meet this Saturday at Aplington-Parkersburg. Eric Faught (106), Ryan Leisure (138) and Ryan Faught (152) all won Sectional titles Saturday at Charles City. Placing second and advancing were Jackson Hamlin (113) ,Will Kirshbaum (132) and Kyle Willms (285).
“We had a good day. We always hope to get all 14 kids to move on, but that did not happen,” said Coach Gary Weber, who is completing his final season at the Lion helm. “We have had a good year and have seen a lot of improvement in the kids, both on and off the mat.”
Charles City won the Class 2A Sectional and advanced nine wrestlers. The Comets had 203 points, edging Osage which finished second with 199 and had seven qualifiers. Clear Lake finished third with 181 points.
Coach Gary Weber provided this overview about his team:
106: Eric Faught, first place. Eric is still undefeated on the year and is poised to make his title run.
113: Jackson Hamlin, second place. Jack has improved his defense and has a shot this Saturday.
120: Braxton Doebel, fourth place. Brax was wrestling well and had a shot of getting to Districts when he broke his arm. It was very unfortunate.
126: Ben Hillyer, third place. Ben had a good day. He showed improvement.
132: Will Kirshbaum, second place. Will is a fighter and he is now one of six guys at Districts.
138: Ryan Leisure, first place. I have never seen three state place winners at one weight in Sectionals. He came out on top and looks ready to repeat as a State champion.
145: Kaleb Froiland, fourth place. Kaleb had a great senior year. He came close to advancing with his patented cradle.
152: Ryan Faught, first place. Ryan had a great day. He beat third ranked Brock Jennings of Osage in overtime. This should help his confidence a ton.
170: Dalton Grell, fifth place. Dalton had a good sophomore year. He has a bright future.
182: Kade Hambly, fourth place. Kade had a super freshman year.
195: Ace Walton, fifth place. Ace is one of the neatest kids I have had the privilege to coach. His day did not go like we had hoped, but his future is so bright.
220: Spencer Christensen. Just like Kade, Spencer had a super freshman year. Very rarely do freshman wrestle at the upper weights and they both won matches.
285: Kyle Willms, second place. Kyle keeps improving. He is a smart kid and he learns from his losses. He has a good shot at making it to State.
