The Clear Lake (15-7) girls opened post-season play with a 59-37 victory over Aplington-Parkersburg Saturday, Feb. 13. The Lions advance to meet fifth ranked (3A) Forest City tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 17) at Forest City. The Indians defeated the Lions in early January, 52-37. The winner will advance to meet the winner of the Cherokee vs. Humboldt game on Saturday, Feb. 20, at Humboldt.
CL 59, Aplington-Parkersburg 37
The Lions wasted no time getting the upper hand on Aplington-Parkersburg when the post-season began Saturday, Feb. 13. They dominated the first half and shot lights out on their way to a 59-37 victory.
“I was pleased with how we jumped on them early and executed the game plan,” said Coach Bart Smith. “We defended their big very well and we put pressure on their guards. Offensively we shot the ball really well and when we can defend as good as we did and shoot the ball as well as we did we are a very good team.”
And while the offense was certainly hot, the Clear Lake defense kept A-P from getting any kind of traction in the first half. The Falcons were held to a mere four points in each of the first two quarters. At the half, the Lions led 30-8.
Emily Snelling was back in the Lion lineup after resting an injury in the late regular season. The junior never missed a beat, knocking down three-pointers with regularity. She finished the game with a team-high 23 points, including five-three pointers. Snelling also made five assists and recorded six steals in the game.
Jordyn Barragy and Jessica Faber also finished in double figures scoring. Barragy

put in 13 points and had four rebounds. Faber came off the bench to score 11 points.
Chloe Mueller knocked down two of three treys on her way to six points. The sophomore also was credited with eight assists. Erin OTool finished the game with four points and Ellie Biebesheimer had two. Biebesheimer was the leader on the boards with five rebounds.
CL 43, Webster City 33
The Lions avenged a two-point loss to Webster City earlier in the season with a solid 43-33 win in the final regular season game played Tuesday, Feb. 9.
The second meeting between the teams was as close as the first through the first half. The Lions held a slim 21-19 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, Clear Lake’s offense continued to produce and they outscored the Lynx, 15-8 and built a lead that could not be topped.
Coach Bart Smith said he has been pleased to see his defense develop and noted the Lions have been holding their opponents under their average by double digits in their final regular season games.
“I thought we played really smart,” said Coach Bart Smith. “Webster City was throwing some different defense at us that we were able to adjust in the flow of the game.”
Emily Snelling was back in the Lion lineup after resting an injury in the late regular season. The junior never missed a beat and paced the team with 16 points.
Jessica Faber and Jordyn Barragy put in eight and seven points respectively, while Erin O’Tool scored five and Ellie Biebesheimer had four points. Chloe Mueller added three points and had two steals.
