Strong start for the CL boys golf team

The Clear Lake boys golf team is off to a strong start.  After a busy week the Lions are 2-0 in the North Central Conference and 7-5 overall.

CL 174, New Hampton 159

Clear Lake’s Kyle Calaguas fired a 34 and teammate Thomas Storbeck had a 35 to help the Clear Lake boys golf team to a 174 to 159 win over New Hampton Monday, April 11.

Evan Krause came in with a 44 and Tate Storbeck carded a 46 to figure in the team scoring for the Lions.  Alex Snelling and Carter Backhaus finished with a 48 and 49 respectively.

“With the amount of talent our program has produced over the years, I can’t re-call many times our top two golfers shot 3 under par,” said Clear Lake Coach Eric Perry. “In very windy weather, a short game is a must.  Thomas and Kyle both were great around the greens.  Kyle had a chip in from off the green, as well as Tate.  Those are stroke savers.”

The Clear Lake junior varsity also defeated the Chickasaws, 195-205.  Jackson Hamlin had the low score for the Lions with a 45.  Tre Geitzenauer was next with a 48, followed by Austin Pitkin with a 50, Dalton Humburg with a 52, Will Cooney at 53 and Ben Blaha with 61.

“The JV played hard and smart,” said Coach Perry.  “Jackson had a solid round.  It is nice to see him out for the first time as a sophomore.  I think he can contribute to our team’s success.  Many first time golfers learned a lot from this meet.”

Decorah

The Lions finished in sixth place at the Viking Invitational played at Decorah.

Holy Family captured the team title with a score of 299, edging out Lakeville South with 300.  Chase was third with a 307, followed by Deborah with 311, Lake City 316  and Clear Lake 326.  The remainder of the field included: Winona (332), Owatonna (332), Rochester Mayo (354) and Crestwood (355).

“Again, a young team, we left a lot of strokes on the course,” said Coach Perry.

The Lions were paced by Kyle Calaguas with a (42-37) 79.  Tate Storbeck and Alex Snel

ling each came in with 82s and Thomas Storbeck had a (43-40) 83.

“Kyle had another good round going, but struggled down the stretch playing the last three holes +4,” explained Perry.  “Thomas had some uncharacteristic bad stretches with high numbers.  I don’t have to worry about him, as he will continue to score and lead our team with Kyle.”  The coach added that confidence is growing for both Tate Storbeck and Alex Snelling.

Also competing for Clear Lake was Evan Krause (42-44- 86), Jackson Hamlin (46-46-92) and Carter Backhaus (46-49-95).

“Evan didn’t play as well as he wanted, but was consistent.  He has worked hard since coming from Iowa Falls.  I see him improving and we enjoy the addition to the team,” said Perry.  “Jackson and Carter continue to vie for that last spot on varsity.  Jackson has shown signs of brilliance, but needs more meet experience.  Carter tries hard and he, too, will have a bright future at CLHS.

CL 167, Humboldt 175, CGD 187

Clear Lake swept medalist and runner-up honors when the Lions met NCC foes Humboldt and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Friday, April 15, at Clarmond Golf Course.  The Lions won by eight strokes over Humboldt and 20 strokes over the Cowboys.

Kyle Calaguas was medalist with a round of 39.  He was followed by Thomas Storbeck with a 42.  The remainder of Clear Lake’s scoring was provided by Evan Krause and Alex Snelling, each with 43s.  Also competing for the Lions was Tate Storbeck and Jackson Hamlin with rounds of 48 and 49 respectively.

Clear Lake’s junior varsity lost its first meet of the season.  The home team came in with a 197, followed by Clear Lake at 206 and Humboldt with 233.

The Lions were led by Carter Backhaus with a 50.  Dalton Humburg and Noah Heggen each had 51s.  Austin Pitkin and Ben Blaha each had rounds of 54.  Seth TenEyck carded a 59.

“Clarmond is a very tricky nine holes.  I think Clarion’s experience of the course is what lead to the defeat,” said Coach Eric Perry.
