Home course advantage was real last week. The Clear Lake girls golf team lost on the road, but won at home. The varsity now has a record of 9-2. The Lions had back-to-back home matches this week with Charles City Monday and Hampton-Dumont Tuesday. On Thursday, the Lions travel to Dike-New Hartford.
Humboldt 192, CL 196,
C-G-D 218
On Tuesday, April the 26, the Lions traveled to the Humboldt Country Club for a triangular against the host Wildcats and Clarion-Goldfield. Humboldt won the meet with a 192, followed by Clear Lake with 196 and Clarion-Goldfield 218.
The Lions’ Emily Snelling was the medalist with a round of 38.
Other Clear Lake scorers were Ashley DeLong with a 48, Mattie Krause 54, and Erin Carew 56. Also competing was Marissa Olk and Jordyn Barragy, who each carded 58s.
The junior varsity girls were led by Madison Finsted and Madison Gochanour, each with 65s, and Grace Hartnett, 67. There was no JV team score.
“I thought the girls really played well, considering the windy conditions,” said Coach Adam Brinkmann. “We have been shooting very consistent scores, and if we continue to work hard on our short game play, we will get the scores to drop even more. Marissa Olk is the lone senior on the team and the last few meets she has been playing in her first ever varsity meets ever, filling in for an injured Carson Frahm. Marissa has made huge improvements from last season, and it’s great to see her continue to wanting to get even better.”
CL 190, Algona 195
On Friday, April 29, the Lions hosted Algona and Iowa Falls-Alden. Clear Lake captured the team title with a score of 190. Algona was five strokes back at 195, and Iowa Falls didn’t have enough girls for a team score.
Snelling was medalist with a 38. Also scoring for the Lions was Ashley DeLong with a 43, Erin Carew 54, and Mattie Krause 55.
“Emily’s swing is clicking into gear, and that’s giving her the confidence she needs right now getting ready for post season play in a couple weeks,” said Coach Brinkmann. “Ashley is one of the most consistent golfers that I have ever coached. She may have a bad shot every now and then, but she finds ways to get those strokes right back and never loses her composure on the golf course.”
Brinkmann continued, “As a team I am very happy with where we have been with our scores, but we are still leaving strokes out there in our chipping and putting, so that is going to be a primary focus for us heading into this week.”
Junior varsity
Junior varsity scores were posted by Madison Gochanour (67), Madison Finstad (66), and Grace Hartnett (60).
