Playing doubles first on Tuesday, May 3, the Lions swept their matches and then went on to also win five of six singles matches.
The team of Gretchen Jones and Kiersten Baalson easily defeated their opponents, 10-1, while Maddy Brant and Ali Witt followed suit with a decisive 10-4 win.
Reagan Brackey and Chloe Mueller outlasted Morgan Kellogg and Emilee Bilharz with a 10-7 victory to go ahead 3-0 in the match.
In singles action, Jones’ win over Julia Page 6-1, 6-0 and Chloe Mueller’s defeat of Morgan Kellogg, 6-1, 6-3, secured the overall team win for the Lions.
Coach Mary Jo Peterson said Kiersten Baalson was patient, yet aggressive, against Sarah Barry in her 7-5 first set win, and confidently finished the match 6-0. Maddy Brant outlasted opponent Emma Heiderbrink, 6-3, 7-5. After a first set loss by a 2-6 score, Reagan Brackey fought back in the second set 6-4, setting her up for the super tiebreaker win, 10-5.
Freshman Maranda Harrison gained experience in her varsity debut, but fell just short to Jody Sindlinger, 3-6, 4-6.
“The girls were able to stay strong with consistent, solid play today,” said Coach Peterson.
Junior varsity action was limited due to the number of courts in Charles City. The only two JV Lions making the trip, Bailey Goldberg and Jassmine Rucker, won their doubles match, 10-4.
