GHV boys crown individual champions
Don Hoppel Co-Ed Relays
The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys track team brought home some individual championships on their way to a fourth place finish at the Don Hoppel Co-Ed Relays held on Monday, May 2, in Garner. The Cardinals earned 63 points in the nine team competition. Forest City won the meet with 151 points.
Sam Cataldo owned the hurdle events with two first place finishes. In the 110 meter hurdles he won in 15.62 and he crossed the line in the 400 meter hurdles in 56.22. He also helped the shuttle hurdle team to a third place finish with a time of 1:03.48. Other members of the relay included Johnathan O’Connor, David Cook and Conner Shaw.
The dynamic duo of Reece Smith and Logan Dalbeck dominated the 3200 meter run with a first and second place finish. Both their times broke the Don Hoppel Relays record. Smith completed the race in 10:04.18 and right behind him was Dalbeck in 10:05.74.
The 4x100 meter relay earned runner-up honors with a time of 45.60. Members of the relay were Shaw, O’Connor, Cook and Sam Cataldo.
“The boys competed well tonight and put up some personal bests, both individually and in relays,” said Coach Kelsey Steffens. “There is definite excitement as we enter Conference and Districts.”

•800 meter run: Derek Brown, third, 2:10.11
•Distance medley: Cook, Shaw, O’Connor, Ray Cataldo, fourth, 3:47.01
•4x800 meter relay: Nathan Larson, Lucas Rayhons, Andy Schreur, Brown, sixth, 9:25.65
Top of Iowa Conference Meet
The GHV boys placed fourth at the Top of Iowa Conference Meet held on Thursday, May 5, in North Union. Forest City won the nine-team meet with 162 points. The Cardinals ended with 84.
Two strong runners captured first and third place for the Cardinals in the 1600 meter run. Logan Dalbeck won the race with a time of 4:39.21. Ray Cataldo was third with 4:50.56.
Reece Smith and Sam Cataldo also had first place individual finishes. Smith won the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:06.63. Sam Cataldo took top honors in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 55.93.
Two relay teams took top honors. The 4x100 meter relay team won with a time of 45.44. Members of the relay were Connor Shaw, Johnathan O’Connor, David Cook and Sam Cataldo. Also winning was the distance medley relay team of Cook, Shaw, O’Connor and Dalbeck with a time of 3:45.67.
Sam Cataldo also did well in the 110 meter hurdles, finishing as runner-up in 15.72.
